Bus 52: DC will be the pilot project of the broader Bus 52 project, a fifty-two week (year-long) trip around the United States in a converted school bus seeking inspiring stories of overcoming obstacles in communities all over the country. Hopefully upon successful completion of this pilot, the project will expand to become a nationwide endeavour reminding us all about the communities that are truly at the heart of this country.
Whether in downtown Washington, the Metropolitan area, or further afield, Bus 52: DC aims to show that in every kind of community, there are people who approach problems affecting their own communities in new and innovative ways. Big cities, small towns, or rural areas, Bus 52 will use emerging technology and social media to bring stories of success in the face of challenge to an audience not always exposed to such challenges.
This Fall, Bus 52 will film profile pieces of inspiring people in the DC area doing amazing things in their community which will be published online as a web series with accompanying articles and more informal vlogs of the team’s reaction to the stories. The completed profile pieces will then be edited together to create a DVD, to be released before the start of the main project next year. Combined with the main project, our goal is to create a unique narrative that tells the story of America in 2011/12.
The project aims to research and source stories not for their perceived market value, but rather for their community value – primarily focused on finding community leaders who might otherwise go unnoticed and recognizing and honouring them for their work. Their stories will be shared with people not only in America but also worldwide who can then learn from their challenges and be inspired by their triumphs. The audience, as well as the Bus 52 team, will be exposed to many kinds of issues in the diverse types of community across the nation’s capital.
Community defines who we are. Bus 52’s mission is to inspire by directing a spotlight on integrity, hard work, and the role of the community in overcoming societal challenges. The people and their stories in the DC area and, ultimately, nationwide will be presented as a patchwork of American community innovation, and will serve to ignite the minds of those watching, further spurring involvement in their own communities.
