My name is Pablo Aravena. I am a Chilean-Canadian filmmaker based in Montreal, Canada. I have been documenting street art since 1998 and it’s a passion of mine which has led me to make films and curate art shows. While making NEXT: A Primer on Urban Painting (Rotterdam International Film Festival 2006), my documentary film about the global culture of street art, I traveled to many of the world’s street art capitals. Upon returning to my native Chile after an eight-year hiatus, I was amazed and delighted by the quality and development of the art form there. I realized that we Chileans had a long history in this art form and that my generation had taken those traditions and built a strong community that was rooted in our past yet evolving in the present into the future. I wanted to share the discovery of the vibrant Chilean street scene with a wider audience, which led me to create and propose this film project. 

 

El Proyecto 

Chile Estyle will be a feature-length documentary film about Chilean Street Art. We will explore the past and present of a unique mural painting tradition in the world. The film will go back in history to the 1940’s until the present, showing us the different influences and developments of Chile’s street art tradition. Three main characters will anchor the film with each one representing a specific era, which reflects how street art has mirrored Chile’s socio/political history. 

Maestro Fernando Marcos now in his 90’s is a mural painter who apprenticed in Mexico under Diego Rivera. He also painted with Siqueiros in the southern Chilean city Chillan. He will recount the beginnings of muralism in Chile in the 40’s and how it was perceived back then. He will tell us about his relationships with Rivera and Siqueiros, the renowned Mexican masters. 

Mono González, the driving force behind the Brigadas Ramona Parra aesthetic will share with us the development of the Brigades in the late 60’s. He will recount how the brigades supported Allende’s presidential campaign with large Agit-Prop murals. 

Cekis is one of the founding fathers of the modern graffiti movement, which took shape in the early 90’s. He will tell us how graffiti began towards the end of the Pinochet dictatorship in Chile. He will also share with us what it was like when this new graffiti scene was taking shape and how it has grown to a legitimate art form recognized worldwide. 

We will investigate the artistic methods of muralists, brigade painters and grafiteros: Starting with the muralists, the political painting brigades moving onto graffiti pioneer Cekis, the innovator Basco Vazko, to rising stars such as Saile and La Robot de Madera. We will document the artists in their everyday lives as well as painting in Santiago, Valparaiso and other regions of Chile like the desert in the north and the lake district in the south. We will not only interview muralists and grafiteros, but we will also talk to the public, which plays a central part in this contemporary style. Chile Estyle will document and showcase Chile’s unique mural painting tradition resulting in a visually arresting, informative and entertaining film. 

 

 

El Plan 

We have already done extensive development of the project and established relationships with all the artists and subjects in the film. Meanwhile we have invested in some pro gear and want to start shooting the film. Just like my previous film "NEXT: A Primer on Urban Painting" I want to start filming material and get the film started. That's how I got the ball rolling last time. To get this show on the road I am going to Chile in November to start the filming of the project. I will follow Cekis around during the Polanco Graffiti Festival in Valparaiso. As well I will get some footage with Mono Gonzales at the Hecho en Casa event in Santiago. I will interview Maestro Marcos and get some footage with him as well. Finally I will get selected artist profiles and city footage. We are shooting the second part of the film and doing the post-production in 2013. The film will be finished by late fall next year and get it out to the film festival circuit for 2014. As well we plan on doing DVD launch and Chile Estyle art shows in selected cities around the world.

Mientras hacia "NEXT: A Primer on Urban Painting" (Festival Internacional de Cine de Rotterdam 2006), mi documental sobre la cultura mundial del arte callejero, viaje a muchas de las capitales mundiales del street art. Al regresar a mi país natal, Chile después de una ausencia de ocho años, quedé sorprendido y encantado por la calidad y el desarrollo de esa forma de ese arte allí. Me di cuenta de que los chilenos teníamos una larga historia de pintar en la calle y que mi generación había tomado esas tradiciones y construido una comunidad sólida que tiene sus raíces en nuestro pasado pero que esta creciendo en el presente hacia el futuro. Quería compartir este descubrimiento de la vibrante escena callejera chilena, con un público más amplio, lo que me llevó a crear y proponer este proyecto cinematográfico.

El Proyecto

Chile Estyle será un largometraje documental sobre el arte en la calle en Chile. Vamos a explorar el pasado y el presente de una tradición de muralismo y pintura en la calle única en el mundo. La película comienza en la década de 1940 y nos acompaña hasta la actualidad. y Veremos las diferentes influencias y desarrollos del arte en la calle en Chile. La película se anclara en tres personajes principales, cada uno representado una época específica que nos demuestra cómo el arte callejero refleja la historia sociopolítica de Chile.

Maestro Fernando Marcos ahora en sus 90’s fue un aprendiz de pintura mural en Méjico con Diego Rivera. También pintó con Siqueiros en la ciudad chilena sureña de Chillán. Él nos contara  como fue los inicios del muralismo en Chile en los años 40 y cómo fue percibido en aquel entonces. También nos hablará de su relación con Rivera y Siqueiros, los famosos maestros del muralismo mejicano.

Mono González, la fuerza impulsora detrás de la estética de las Brigadas Ramona Parra compartirá con nosotros como fue el desarrollo de las Brigadas a finales de los años 60. Recuenta la historia de cómo las brigadas apoyaron la campaña presidencial de Allende con grandes murales de agitación y protesta.

Cekis es uno de los padres del movimiento del graffiti moderno, que se creo en la década de los 90. Él nos contara sobre los comienzos del graffiti chileno al final de la dictadura de Pinochet, como fue tomando forma y como se ha convertido en una forma de arte legítima reconocida en todo el mundo.

Investigaremos los métodos artísticos de los muralistas, los pintores brigadistas y los grafiteros: comenzando con los muralistas, después las brigadas de pintura política y llegando al graffiti, hablando con el pionero Cekis, el innovador Basco Vazko, y nuevas estrellas en ascenso como Saile y La Robot de Madera. Mostraremos la conceptualización de las obras y su creación. Veremos a los artistas en su vida cotidiana, pintando donde viven y en sus viajes a Santiago, Valparaíso y otras regiones de Chile, como el desierto en el norte, y la región de los lagos en el sur. No sólo entrevistaremos a muralistas y grafiteros, pero también vamos a hablar con el público, que desempeña un papel fundamental en este estilo contemporáneo. Chile Estyle documentará y pondrá en vitrina esta tradición de pintura mural única en el mundo creando una película con un impacto visual fuerte que informa y entretiene.

 

El Plan

Ya hemos desarrollado este proyecto extensamente. Hemos creado relaciones con todos los artistas que queremos retratar y investigado los temas de la película. Mientras tanto, hemos invertido en un pequeño equipo audiovisual profesional y queremos empezar el rodaje de la película. Al igual que mi película "NEXT: A Primer on Urban Painting" quiero empezar a acumular material y agarrar momentum. Para empezar esta filmación iré a Chile en noviembre. Seguiré a Cekis durante el Polanco Graffiti Festival. Además voy a filmar con Mono Gonzales en el evento Hecho en Casa. Voy a entrevistar Maestro Marcos y obtener algunas imágenes con él también. Finalmente grabare perfiles de artistas y de paisajes de ciudad. Rodaremos la segunda parte de la película y haremos la post-producción en 2013. La película estará terminada a finales del próximo año y sacarlo al circuito de festivales de cine para 2014. Además planeamos lanzar un DVD y  hacer una serie de exposiciones de arte con la película en ciudades seleccionadas de todo el mundo.
