I will create a journalistic photo book contrasting photos my dad took during the war and shortly after with current photos in Seoul.
In the 1950's a US Army soldier, Bill Culler, spent much of his R&R time photographing Korea. These photographs were not the usual assortment of snapshots of weapons and other soldiers; instead this teenage boy from Colorado used his camera to capture images of the Korean mountains as well as the street scenes from the cities. His photographs document the devistation of war on people on a personal level, as he captured intimate moments of hunger, need, and hope in the eyes of the people he was sent to help and protect. Some of these stirring images were developed and put into a scrapbook, while others were converted to slides in a rare collection of full color photos of Korea in the mid 1950's. When the time came to return home, the soldier packed the slides and photos away in a footlocker, locked it and mailed it home ahead of him. When my dad passed away, I brought his footlocker home with me to California and found the photos and slides. Being in the Army myself, and having spent a great deal of time being in and studying culture and language of Korea, I found the photos very moving.
My great friend Eric Holm of Eric Holm Photography, and I are goind to fully restore all these photos and slides, and go to Korea and take images of our own, to contrast those that my dad took when he was there. We will be putting these together in a book that will show the power of hope, determination, and the hard working spirit of the nation of South Korea. While in Seoul on military duty last August, I scouted out some of the locations that my dad took his photos from. Many of the buildings are no longer there, and as a result of South Korea's long-standing love of nature, much of the landscape has grown full with beautiful trees. There are so many changes, so much growth, and the people of Korea have taken that hope and determination and made a remarkeable achivement with it. It is this that we will capture, the fighting spirit that has taken South Korea from the ashes of war to world reknownd leaders in Art, Technology, Industry, and Education.
