About this project
THE PURPOSE
Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" series has created a pop culture phenomenon among young women and girls, especially teenage girls. It has also brought on a lot of outspoken criticism. Many accuse the books of being anti-feminist and of creating an unhealthy ideal in young impressionable minds. My comic book takes these criticisms and puts them in the form of a humorous, dramatic, noir-inspired, not-so-distant-future dystopia.
THE COMIC
Set roughly 10 years from now, the reader sees - through the eyes of disgruntled shelter clerk "Emily K" - the consequences that have occurred thanks to the popularity of a series of vampire novels, The "Twilyte" Series. Girls have so idolized everything "Twilyte" since they were teenagers that now as adults, they confuse abusive, immature relationships for genuine love. As a result, battered women's shelters have ballooned, and Feminist thought itself has shifted. Author "Stephanie Mayer" is now an icon for the new "Liberatist Feminist" movement, whose philosophies were pioneered by her novels. See the comic up to its current point of completion at TwilightComic.com.
WHERE THE MONEY GOES
I plan on self-publishing. The funding first and foremost would go towards cranking out hundreds of copies, enough to consign, offer for free to promising networking connections, place on local coffeeshop bookshelves, and sell at comic-cons. Other costs include marketing materials and fees for 'cons. I also plan to buy an ISBN number and listings in book databases.
Publishing the book now, at the height of the craze, would help it get noticed. Time is of the essence.
