Update #1: Logo, Layout, and a New Video

Update #1 · Apr 11, 2011 · 4 comments

Let us start off by giving a huge "THANK YOU" to all of our backers.  We have been very excited for all the support Taposé has received thus far.

Rick and I have been working to get a logo and a more professional design for Taposé.  We now have a great logo which fits Taposé perfectly while conveying its creativity and professionalism.  Take a look at the logo below and let us know what you think.  In addition to the logo, we will soon have a more professional layout, buttons, and icons.  The images seen currently are used in the alpha version, but we definitely need a better design for the end product.  We will update you with the new layout as soon as it is finalized.

Lastly, although we have had many comments regarding our unique video, we have decided to post a video which is a little more informative.  We will keep the current video linked within the Taposé writeup, but we feel the new video better conveys the concept and idea for the Kickstarter community.  The new video will be posted within the next couple days, so stay tuned for that.

Again, thank you for supporting Taposé!  This project cannot happen without your help.

Jason, Thanks for your comments. I understand exactly what you mean about having a more creative feeling logo versus one shown above. That is precisely what we were seeking initially, but once we saw this logo it just seemed right. Rick and I think this logo has a professional feel while still keeping some of the creativity as well. However, we are engineers, not logo designers. The current logo is not set in stone yet and can be changed later if the majority of Kickstarter backers seek a change. After all, we could not complete this project if not for you all, and are therefore willing take Taposé's backers into consideration with our design and functionality.

Also, we are not afraid of critiques, so give them freely with the upcoming new video and layout as well. Better to get critiques from our backers now rather than later after it is launched :)

I'm glad to hear things are moving forward. I am hopeful the app will live up to our previously crushed expectations RE: Courier.

If I am being honest though I am not a fan of the logo. The shiny gradient, the blue, the colored squares that I feel are a bit too "on the nose", if you will, nod to Microsoft. I know its just this one man's opinion but I would rather feel something more grounded in the artistic, sketchy, "I'm doodling in my digital Moleskine all day" aspects that drew me to Courier in the first place. This just feels over worked and heavy.

I hope this isn't too negative for the sake of being negative, if you would rather not hear from the peanut gallery I can understand that, but given the catalyst for this project is something that is more than likely close to the hearts of every one of your backers, you can imagine we all probably have a different vision of the final product, not that that makes me right and you wrong, but I wanted to share my thoughts hopefully to be constructive.

It's my own experience as a designer creeping in. If I knew the first thing about coding though I'd just keep my mouth shut and give you a run for your money. ; )

I hope we see a successful funding soon, it looks good for it with 39 days left.

      Best,
      J.

Andy, great thoughts. I see you found our previous response to questions like this. For others who have similar questions, please see a comment I made about a week ago in the comments section where I addressed some of these same questions. Thanks for your interest!

Guys, I like your idea and I admire your ambition. But I'm wondering... will Apple let you do this? And what will happen if it doesn't? The reason I ask is that Taposé offers OS-like functionality, allowing multiple apps to be viewed simultaneously and to exchange data. This is the kind of thing that has triggered App Store rejections in the past, under Apple's "no widgets" rule.

Yeah, I know Taposé itself is not a widget... but it effectively turns other apps into widgets. It goes far beyond the typical "one app, one function" that Apple likes to see. Of course from a user's point of view, that's Taposé's strength... but Apple may see it as encroaching on the company's basic UI.

I don't mean to be a wet blanket; Taposé is a great idea. I'm sure you've done some thinking about Apple's reaction, and I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.
