About this project

The Story

Originally from northeastern Connecticut, Vanessa Kafka has been a humble member of the Boston music scene since moving to the city in 2006.  “A singer gifted with a voice of uncommon beauty,” her music is recognized for its atmospheric, rootsy tones and poignant lyrics. She has released four original albums, the most recent of which solidified her fiercely loyal following.  Into Place (2008) has sold over 1,000 copies to date and was supported by a Northeast tour in the spring of 2009. 

Vanessa has always pursued her music alongside other notable ambitions.  Her latest endeavor – an MBA from MIT’s Sloan School of Management – marked the beginning of a new experiential chapter and the past two years have undoubtedly yielded some of her best work yet.  Now, emboldened with a new band and a refined vision, she is eager to share these new songs with you. 

The Project

In order to embark on a new recording project, Vanessa Kafka and the band need funding.  Your contributions will go towards the following:

• Use of a professional recording studio
• Compensation for the engineer's time (recording, overdubs, mixing)
• Compensation for all contributing musicians for their time and creativity
• Compensation for a mastering engineer's time
• Travel expenses associated with recording
• Initial set-up costs to distribute the album digitally

If you are new to Kickstarter, there are two notable factors to keep in mind that determine the success of this endeavor:

• Kickstarter operates on an all-or-nothing model.  This means that the full project goal MUST be met for the artist to receive any of the contributions.  Not 25% of it.  Not 10%.  100% of it.
• KickStarter takes 5% of each project. A small price to pay for the use of its sleek interface and exposure to its warm and welcoming community.  This 5% Kickstarter cost has been built into the project goal, along with the items listed in the cost breakdown described above.  By contributing to this project, you provide support to a company that is entirely focused on helping creative minds like you and me get the extra lift we need.

A final note: The project goal leaves little room for error.  How far each song gets explored on the EP is entirely dependent on your contributions and whether we exceed our goal.  With that in mind, additional contributions above and beyond our goal will go towards breathing more life into each song, paying musicians what they deserve and marketing the album.
