Advice from the Trenches (excerpt from the book) This book is much more than a collection of fifteen years of beautiful artwork by the reknowned and award winning art nouveau advertising illustrator, Echo Chernik. In this book, Echo answers the questions "What's it like to be an advertising illustrator?" She addresses the topics of portfolio creation, contract negotiation, and the process involved in becoming a successful commercial artist.
As an instructor of Graphic Design and Illustration at Pratt Institute and Skidmore CCI, and one of the industry's most in-demand advertising illustrators, Echo has designed this book not only as a collection of previously uncompiled illustrations, but also as a conduit for dispensing years of accumulated knowledge and advice to fledgling and hopeful young illustrators. Through a stunning visual tour of published works, Echo divulges hints and tips on how to navigate the business. She also shares often humourous stories about working on individual projects.
The Studio of Echo Chernik is the combined efforts of Echo and Lazarus Chernik, both graduates of Pratt institute in New York. Echo's clients have included over the years, Trek Bicycles, Miller, Camel, Coors, Nascar, Mattel, The Bellagio Casino, Celestial Seasonings Teas, Sears, K-Mart, Arlo Guthrie, The Dave Matthews Band, and many more. Echo has been the recipient of numerous "Best In..." awards, Gold awards, Silver awards, Cover awards and Fan Favorite awards, including HP's Best In Show. Echo has also been featured in three publications of Spectrum to date.

Why does Echo need your help? This book has been in demand by Echos fans for several years now. It is the first collection ever of her work (published or unpublished) offered by the artist. Echo wanted to make it more than simply a book showcasing page upon page of beautiful artwork. With fifteen years illustrating professionally and five years experience teaching, Echo chose to divulge advice and guidance alongside examples of published products with the hopes of educating young illustrators and artists in the midst of deciding their own future.
What are you going to do with extra funding?
Echo has delayed publishing such a collection primarily due to the cost of publishing. Collectibility and demand of her work has her fans requesting something special - and has resulted in the creation of this collection. The first edition run of this book is a run of 1000. With the help of kickstarter and our fans, we have been able to upgrade to hardcover (run cost $9,000), and are able to offer them at an affordable price to students and educators! We are currently working on adding on beautiful bookplates for patrons, and other goodies.
It is a 100-page, full color softcover ((update - HARDCOVER!)) written by the artist and compiled by her husband, the award-winning creative director Lazarus Chernik. The artist appreciates her fans support, and is offering up special patron collectibles to help fund this project. All copies of this book sold through the patron program will bear a special Patron Only bookplate, created one at a time and only available to patrons. Drawings from some of the commercial projects are also being offered up to fans and collectors through this program, as are signed bookplates with drawings.
