Xin and I came up with the idea of building an Erfworld city called Kickstarter. Hey, everyone. Thanks for coming here and taking a look at our funding drive to make an Erfworld motion comic (and probably some other related projects).
What's the "Year of the Dwagon?"
The project met 100% funding for the motion comic after 3 days. (Thank you!) So I renamed it the "Year of the Dwagon," because this could be the year that you guys make all the dream projects come through. Xin did this fantastic art for it, and I'll be adding new videos and incentives soon. With your pledges, this leap year just might be the great leap forward for Erfworld.
Oh. What's Erfworld?
Erfworld is an ongoing webcomic about an obsessive strategy gamer named Parson Gotti, who gets summoned into a fantasy universe that works a lot like a game. It's free to read at Erfworld.com, and it was named one of Time magazine's Top Ten Graphic Novels of 2007.
Here's a video I made a couple of years ago to promote the comic. I just released this to help the Kickstarter project get going.
The Motion Comic Project
I've been lucky enough in my life to know a lot of extremely talented people. But my friend Brian Young has a resumé that makes my jaw drop. We've been talking about working together on an Erfworld project for years, and this is finally it.
We're planning to take all of Book 1 of Erfworld and produce a video treatment that's completely faithful to the original comic. We'll call on voice talent from the Erfworld community to bring the story to life in a way that's accessible to an audience outside of webcomics readers. When this is done, you'll be able to sit at your desk or put in a DVD on a car trip and experience Erfworld in a completely new way.
I've had this idea for a motion comic for a long time. With your help, I can finally make it happen. Here's a proof-of-concept video I produced with Phil Kahn of Guilded Age, back in 2008 or 2009. This is the "intermission" page with the Shakespeare sonnet.
Other Projects We Could Fund
The motion comic is going to be expensive, but it's only one of several projects that I have in mind to grow Erfworld and offer more to the readers. We also want to completely redesign the Erfworld website to include blogs for fan art, gaming news, and sharing your game-related stories, art and video. If we go far enough beyond our funding goal, I will make the website specifications a public document so you can see what we're planning, and possibly help out. NOTE: the goal is now to reach $39,000 for the website redesign, see project update 2 for details.
I also want to ask you "who should be reading Erfworld?" If we can pull in $2000 or so, I will set aside 300 books and ask you for people you know (or know of) who should receive one. These could be anyone from celebrities to your college professor. Though keep in mind, a few celebs have already received their copies.
Beyond that, we've got plans for new comics and new merchandise. We'd like to do a run of Hamstard beanies, so maybe if our incentives fill up we could add that to the mix.

Rob Balder is the author of Erfworld, the creator of PartiallyClips, co-founder of the Funny Music Project and of the Logan Awards.
Erfworld is a story-driven fantasy/comedy webcomic about a master strategy gamer stuck in a wargame. The first book, The Battle for Gobwin Knob was written by Rob Balder and illustrated by Jamie Noguchi. It was recognized as one of the top 10 graphic novels of 2007 by Time Magazine. The second book, Love is a Battlefield is illustrated by Xin Ye.
