This is the What magazine is based off the photo blog thisisthewhat.com, with a focus on personal, non-commissioned photography.
I started the photo blog This is the What in 2009 as a way to keep track of photography that I loved and didn't want to forget. What started as a small visual Rolodex for myself turned into something bigger, a community of talented, creative people, who shared their work and career ups and downs to a broader audience.
As a photo editor I look at images all day - mostly assignments and some personal work - it is there that I get a strong sense of the photographer and their interest, goals and passion for the medium.
The magazine will be printed bi-annually - with the first issue out in early February 2012 and the second in August 2012 - and will be devoted entirely to personal work and projects. Each issue will consist of six photographers work and an in-depth interview with each of them.
The money raised by Kickstarter will go toward the design, production, printing and distribution of the issues as well as a redesign of the website to make searching for content easier and allowing for larger image sizes.
