About the movie
At its essence, ‘Dear Jen’ is a story about re-engaging with life. It is the story of Owen, a man who, after the loss of his parents and the dissolution of his marriage, has fallen into a relatively emotionless existence, gliding through a life of banality, toxic relationships and the mundane routine of his job as a vending machine proprietor. Having experienced the loss of my Mom less than a year ago, I can keenly identify with what Owen is feeling. Had I not had the love and support of my family and loved ones, shutting off from the world and slipping into certain numbness would have been an easy path to fall into. Owen, however, does not have a support system. He doesn’t have the people around him who can remind him of the effervescent beauty of life. The only outlets he has are his one-sided voiceover letters to a mysterious ‘Jen.’ So, after falling from the roof at a New Year’s Eve party and subsequently sitting in the emergency room alone, Owen comes to the realization that he needs to make some changes. Over the next year, he works to set himself on a new path, to surround himself with people who can become his family…his support system. He soon finds that injecting himself into his estranged son’s life; reconnecting with old friends and cousins; shedding those relationships that have held him back; and falling in love with Vera, a bank teller and fellow divorcee, brings light-hearted satisfaction back into his life. However, falling back into the familiarity of old patterns and relationships is a constant and looming threat. In the end, the story is about the sometimes uncomfortable decisions that we have to make in our lives. Do we choose to do the things that will make us better people? Or do we choose the easy, safe, and familiar route - even though we know it may be fraught with toxicity, numbness, and/or unhappiness?
In a market saturated with superhero sequels and vampire-based tentpole movies, I find it increasingly difficult to empathize with the characters we see on the screen. ‘Dear Jen’ will be a considerable alternative to the popcorn fare. It is about life and death and love and children and responsibility and growing up and jealousy and pain – basically all the things that can bond a family together or tear it apart. I believe that there are audiences out there craving for relatable characters, and stories that they can recognize and identify with. There’s a seriousness to the material, but it is balanced by humor. Rarely in life is there drama without comedy or comedy without drama. ‘Dear Jen’ is a story filled with memorable moments and characters that will tug on your heartstrings and make you laugh at the same time. --Stephen Suettinger
Where the money goes
We have a wonderfully creative team of filmmakers eager to get started and we plan to shoot the film in October of this year. But we need your help. We need to raise $22k in order to pay for development funds for the movie. This is just a small portion of the overall budget, but it is a financial necessity since we are planning to go into production soon.
Here are some of the things that we are raising funds to cover:
- Location Scouting
- Casting Fees
- Travel Expenses
- Legal Expenses
- Graphic Design
- Web Design
- Production Design
Kickstarter is a great platform for supporting creative endeavors. However, only fully successful Kickstarter campaigns (ones that meet their goals in the allotted time) are funded. So it's all or nothing. If we don't raise the entire $22,000 in 30 days, we won't get a dime.
FROM KICKSTARTER – “If the project you’re backing is successfully funded, your card will be charged when the project reaches its funding deadline. If the project does not reach its funding goal, your card is never charged.”
Given our trying economic times, it’s hard asking for money. Harder still to donate it. But given that our original plan of winning Powerball to fund the movie didn’t pan out, we’re here talking to you. We are going to make a wonderful movie. The characters are relatable and memorable. The message is hopeful. We hope that you will join us on this wonderful adventure and we look forward to including you in every step along the way!
