Got my pen and more importantly my thank you message from my student, not sure which is better the pen or the thank you :D
Either way Very cool, one of the better KS Projects I have backed - thank you

They're gorgeous!
Creator Maggie Dodson on April 7, 2012
Oh how sleek and elegant is this pen! It makes me want to write with it immediately.

Thanks! I hope everybody likes what they get.

Pen rests! How fabulous!!
Creator Maggie Dodson on March 26, 2012
Fabulous!
I do like the steel nibs....they look great!
Just re-read your message Shawn, re thickness, on 13 February..............I'll have thicker with tapering, ideally, please. Or whatever you have to do to make it work. Thanks
Creator Aimee Eddlestone on March 24, 2012
Shawn, the 'first set of twins' (update #31) are GORGEOUS!!!
Creator shawn-newton on February 27, 2012
Davis - no problem! It's never too late to change - and even after you get your pen, if you decide that your section just doesn't fit, I'll make another until we get it just right. Basically, all the pens I'm making now are going to be going to the kids once I get ink to give out with them. Once I can buy all of the blanks, nibs, clips, and other materials and tools, I'll get really started on my kickstarter pens.
Cheers!
Creator Davis on February 27, 2012
I'd like to change from "straight" to "slight taper;" are you making pens to practice before the pens for the backers get made? I'm not in a hurry, and I'm enjoying seeing your progress.
Creator shawn-newton on February 19, 2012
Sounds great Maggie!
Creator Maggie Dodson on February 19, 2012
Hi Shawn, I forgot to say I don't want a clip on my pen, thanks.
Creator Maggie Dodson on February 17, 2012
Hi Shawn, re length etc, I'm not going to be fussy.......that sounds fine to me. Thanks for all your updates and communications.
Creator shawn-newton on February 16, 2012
I remember you! Very glad to hear from you and thanks so much for your support!
Cheers!
Creator m13a8 on February 16, 2012
Hey! I was just stumbling through kickstarter at work this morning and saw this, then I saw your name and location and thought you seemed familiar and then it clicked -- FPN! I don't know if you remember me, but I'm m13a8 over there. I still have the green Duofold Junior you sold me a couple years ago, and I also still have those prints you sent me and have gotten a lot of positive comments on them! Wish I was able to back you more than I did, but best of luck to you! Can't wait to see this get off the ground!!
Creator shawn-newton on February 13, 2012
Hey Maggie! Well, this pen is about 134 mm long, and about 16mm thick at the thickest, but the section is rather skinny b/c I only have a 1/2 inch tap/die set for the cap to barrel threads. I can make some fat barrels, but they have to taper down a lot to fit in the cap. I'll be getting some larger tooling and will be able to make thicker pens once funding comes through. So the section, at the thickest, is about 11.5mm thick.
Creator Maggie Dodson on February 13, 2012
..............I should add the reason I'm asking. I have a big hand so:-
* I would like larger rather than smaller
* in Black with some subtle variations in the colour
* stub nib
* and for it to be sleek and elegant, to match my writing, of course!
and I will leave all the details to you Shawn so I am surprised a little bit, at least. Thanks and hope you're having fun with this.
Creator Maggie Dodson on February 13, 2012
No 3 in two hours! Well done you.
If you posted this info I apologise in advance......but how long is the pen's casing please?
Creator Brian Cole on February 10, 2012
Shawn, I've talked to you privately about my pen but I was wondering in general how the pen distribution will go. Are you going to offer up the pens that we've seen or are you going to make a new one for each backer?
Creator Jason Magruder on February 7, 2012
I don't know that this is the most cost effective route to getting fountain pens into the hands of students, but I think it is an awesome way to introduce young people to the wonder of handcrafted goods. Kudos to you sir for helping to ensure that the next generation has an appreciation for artistry and hand work.
Creator Maggie Dodson on February 6, 2012
Hi Shawn, I was going to request a particular colour and design for my pen but having seen a couple of examples I think I will just be surprised by what you send me as they all look lovely!
Creator Sushan Modak on January 21, 2012
Hi Shawn,
I wanted you to know that just I did a $125.00 for your project. I think what you are doing for the kids is excellent and we are getting good products. It is a win win for everybody. Keep up the good work and we need more people like you in the society.
Creator shawn-newton on January 21, 2012
Wood pens - something I do want to try actually. There's a turner in Texas who makes threaded inserts from plastic and glues them into the wood and then turns that so you have a wooden pen but without the metal hardware to hold it together. A couple of very nice guys have donated some wood blanks to me and this is something I'm going to try out eventually.
Creator Grant Smith on January 20, 2012
I ordered a couple of custom pens from the Baltz project here on kickstarter and they are wonderful, albeit ball point as opposed to my preference a fountain pen. http://bit.ly/rg5emq was a link the Baltz project used to source their custom wood blanks. I am not sure if you would want to open that particular can of worms for this project as it will increase complexity for you. There are some lovely examples of wood on the 3 web pages.
I really liked the pens you have made so far, thank you for the links.
Creator Brian Cole on January 20, 2012
You want names? Here's some names:
1) Shawn's Pens. Anyone? You could make a giant pen that would be good for hitting paparazzi.
2) Java Pens. One model could be the Jamaican Me Crazy.
3) What's wrong with Newton Pens? Remember Parker, Waterman, Sheaffer etc
Seriously though, this is going to be your company that you'll have to live with so pick something yourself that YOU like. You make good pens we'll buy them no matter what the name.
Creator shawn-newton on January 20, 2012
So far I've made three pens. The third one is pretty good - a bit rough but I don't have all the different sandpapers and finishing supplies I need, but it looks pretty good and it's all centered.
Here's the third:

Have you got any pictures of the pens you are looking to make or the woods you are planning to use? Can we put in requests for types of wood?
Creator Eli Rogers on January 20, 2012
If my vote counts for anything, I say 'Coffeegrinder Pens'. If you came up to me and said you own the business 'Coffeegrinder Press', I wouldn't care. But if you came up to me and said you own the business 'Coffeegrinder Pens', I'd be very intrigued.
Creator shawn-newton on January 19, 2012
I asked my kids about a brand name, and they asked about my website and print studio, Coffeegrinder Press, and they said it should be Coffeegrinder Pens. I'm not sure though. I'll keep asking and we'll think about it. :)
Creator Maggie Dodson on January 19, 2012
Such a fantastic idea which I am delighted to be a part of. I wait with bated breath for my pen and my letter and to hear how this scheme develops. I'm very curious to see some examples of student handwriting styles and to read their writing as inspired by your pen.
By the way what is the name the students have given your pen?
Creator Grant Smith on January 18, 2012
cool idea, any ideas on international shipping?
Creator Brian Cole on January 18, 2012
Glad to help fund a project like this. I believe in your motivation and your skill in accomplishing it. Like to support our children and a future pen maker.
Creator Eli Rogers on January 18, 2012
Happy to contribute at least a little. Any project that involves pens gets my attention. And I love that you want to help kids write. Hope it's successful.

So pleased to be your first backer. I believe in you, and in your goals.
