Low cost physics textbooks for iPad and Kindle.
We are developing a set of physics textbooks to allow anyone to learn advanced physics at the college level at low cost. This material will be available as an iBook created with the new iBooks Author from Apple to develop interactive iPad books. In addition, a version of the app will be made available for Mac computers.
Let's face it - textbooks have gotten prohibitively expensive! One goal of this project is to make learning materials available in eBook form at low cost to fight outrageous textbook prices. Right now we will be starting with development of quantum mechanics and thermodynamics books - but we plan to complete books for the entire physics curriculum.
If possible I would like to hire programmers to develop an in-app tutorial feature so that students having trouble can submit questions and receive answers within the app. Apps will also include built-in testing/quizzes so students can test their knowledge and receive feedback.
The courses covered will be the fundamental areas of physics: including mechanics, thermodynamics, electricity & magnetism, quantum mechanics, and an introduction to modern physics and relativity. We will also include a freshman physics book - for $15! Look on Amazon and these can go for $150 and more. So these books will cost students a fraction of what ordinary textbooks cost - yet cover the same material. A sample screen from a calculus book we have worked on for this project:
These will be full blown textbooks - the goal is to get professors to consider the alternative of low cost eBooks to save students a great deal of money. Plus they will give self-starters a great resource if they want to study physics on their own. Books will be fully interactive including features like embedded video lectures and problem solving sessions.
