This year, the MIX NYC Queer Experimental Film Festival marks the 25th anniversary of bringing queer experimental film from around the world to a dedicated and enthusiastic audience in New York City. What began as the brainchild of founders Sarah Schulman and Jim Hubbard on an East Village rooftop in 1987 has blossomed into a week-long festival that reaches a diverse New York audience excited by and hungry for rigorous, avant garde and exceptional work in a welcoming, fun environment. MIX NYC also inspired artists in other countries to create their own version of MIX, in Brasil (1993), Mexico (1996), Milan (2010) and Copenhagen (2011), each run autonomously but part of the MIX family.
We are excited to share this important milestone by taking a look back at the last 25 MIX Festivals in addition to premiering new work, installations and performances from a diverse group of artists.
Each year, the festival is organized and run by a team comprised mostly of volunteers who are dedicated to not only putting on the festival but constructing a space to show it in as well.
In addition to the the annual festival, MIX NYC runs a preservation project, Memorizing MIX, currently restoring the works of filmmaker Margeurite Paris, a youth media training workshop, A Different Take, which gives queer youth the opportunity to create short films that premiere at the festival, and community screenings not only around the five boroughs, but around the entire world, including Mexico City, Milan, Brazil and Copenhagen.

The mercurial nature of New York City real estate has always proved to be a challenge to putting on the festival every year. Finding a space that is both large enough to accommodate a theater, a space for installations and a space for the audience to be able to interact with the filmmakers and artists between screenings while also being accessible and welcoming to everyone (artist, audience and staff) and a price we can afford has never been an easy feat.
Then to transform that space, usually a raw one, into the festival venue requires a dedicated team of volunteers and staff who give weeks of their time to the task, both before and after the festival has finished.
MIX would not exist without the support of our community, through volunteering their time and energy and attending the festival in record breaking numbers every year. The past 25 years of the festival have shown that there is a need for a platform for work that represents and resonates with our audiences.
We want this, our 25th MIX Festival, to be a celebration not only of a milestone in the festival's long history, but a celebration of the community that has supported us from the very first festival. With their continued support, we can look forward to 25 more great years of MIX and 25 more after that!
