Yep, this is our second Kickstarter drive for "Every Everything: The Music, Life & Times of Grant Hart" after an incredibly successful initial drive. Right now you might be asking yourself, "If the first drive was so successful, why a second?"
The answer is that we want to include as many archival images and videos and as much of the music of Hüsker Dü, Nova Mob, and Grant Hart as we can, and the rights to use those images, videos, and music costs money. So far we've tracked down and secured the rights to some truly incredibly photographs, the vast majority of which have never been seen before. But we'd like to get more, and we still haven't even begun to pay for music. Which is why we're back, once again asking for your help.
As you read this, we are about to spend the month of August filming Grant Hart in and around the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, putting together the bulk of the interviews with Grant that we'll use in our film (and we're shooting in some pretty cool, historic places, too). So take a moment to read about our movie, and consider lending us a hand in telling the story of one of the most influential artists of the past 30 years...
The Story
William S. Burroughs, Groucho Marx, Studebakers, rare books, Marcel Duchamp, Freemasons, obscure history, diatribes against chain hotels. Sit down with Grant Hart for even a few minutes and and you might hear about any one of these topics, or perhaps you'll hear about something equally interesting and esoteric. Chances are it will be one of the most fascinating conversations you've had in some time. And more than likely, you'll never realize that you're talking to one of the most influential musicians of the past thirty years.
In 1979, Grant Hart, along with Bob Mould and Greg Norton, formed Hüsker Dü in St. Paul, MN, and blazed an entirely new sonic trail never before heard. Combining the uproarious rage of hardcore punk with the pop melodicism of 60's rock, they created the template that nearly every guitar-based band after them followed, almost single-handedly fabricating the sound that would later be credited to Nirvana and their ilk. Since their breakup in 1988, Grant has continued to make music and art on his own terms that consistently eschews fads and takes chances.
With Grant Hart as the only interview subject, EVERY EVERYTHING will tell the story of his life, from his beginnings, through his days in Hüsker Dü, and up to the present. In this feature-length documentary you'll learn his influences, his obsessions, his loves, his passions, his art, his music, and everything in between, leaving no stone unturned. For the first time ever, you'll hear everything about Grant Hart as told by Grant Hart -- the good, the bad, and the ugly. Think of it as a rock 'n' roll FOG OF WAR!
Who We Are
Directing EVERY EVERYTHING is Gorman Bechard, the filmmaker behind the KickStarter-funded COLOR ME OBSESSED, A FILM ABOUT THE REPLACEMENTS. That movie has gone on to earn critical praise from places like Rolling Stone, which called it one of "The Seven Best New Music Documentaries of the Year," Spinner, which in naming it one of the "Top Music Docs to Rock Out To," described it as "the ultimate testament to music nerd fandom and how important the right band can be to the people who love them," and The Village Voice, which said is was "a rock version of Rashomon."
"This film is not just for fans of Grant and Husker Du,"explains Gorman. "This is the ultimate rock 'n' roll story. Grant Hart has seen it all, done it all. And for anyone who's ever spent a hour with the man, you quickly realize he's one of the most captivating story tellers you will ever meet."
Gorman is also the director of the just-released (and also KickStarter-funded) Archers of Loaf concert documentary, WHAT DID YOU EXPECT? (it just had its World Premiere in June!) and the award-winning narrative features FRIENDS (WITH BENEFITS) and YOU ARE ALONE. You can read an interview with Gorman Bechard in FilmMaker Magazine here.
Producing the film along with Gorman is Jan Radder, who was the Supervising Producer on COLOR ME OBSESSED and Production Manager on WHAT DID YOU EXPECT? And shooting the film along with Gorman is Sarah Hajtol. Together they were the principal cinematographers on COLOR ME OBSESSED and WHAT DID YOU EXPECT?
Our company, What Were We Thinking Films, has a proven track record and nearly thirty years of experience making feature films. This film will get made, it will play film festivals, it will screen in theatres (check the list of COLOR ME OBSESSED screenings), and you WILL receive your backer prize.
Where Your Money Goes
By the time this KickStarter campaign is over, we'll have shot most of the film. However, rights to music, archival footage, artwork, original photographs (and we have a bunch lined up that NO ONE has ever seen before) costs a lot of money. The money you donate to EVERY EVERYTHING will go towards paying for these things and more: a sound mix, video mastering, and those ever popular film festival submission fees.
Now, we're asking for $3,000, but honestly we're hoping for a lot more. With COLOR ME OBSESSED we had to do several KickStarter campaigns. With your help, we can cut that number down drastically for this film.
What Happens If We Don't Reach Our Goal?
If we fail to reach our funding goal, we get absolutely nothing. That means you keep any money you've pledged to donate. We only get the money you pledge (and your credit card is only charged) if and when we successfully fund our project. So please give what you can, because every little bit helps.
