NEW REWARD: Hand Sown Painting by Puerto Rican Artist Chago Flores

Good morning!

We're excited to announce a new reward. Puerto Rican painter Santiago "Chago" Flores (represented by the Petrus Gallery in Puerto Rico, exhibited at Museum of the Americas, and recipient of last year's Jackson Pollock Foundation Grant) has generously donated one of his works. His process is fantastic: After Flores makes several paintings, he takes the canvases apart & cuts them into pieces, finally rearranging & hand sowing the cloth together with sequins. Below are photos of "Celeste" and a brief bio about the artist. In support of Mala Mala, Flores recommended we price the work at $900, three times less than the listed gallery price. Technique:: Acrylic, Sequins, and beads on sown cloth

Santiago Flores. Graduated in 1992 from The School of Plastics Arts of Puerto Rico, in Old San Juan, and moved to Mexico City where he completed a Masters in painting at the National Autonomous University of Mexico's Academy of San Carlos. On his return to the island, Santiago worked as a designer of special exhibits for the Biennial of Latin American and Caribbean Engraving, and on other projects including set and costume design for theater and dance. He's offered mosaic and visual arts workshops to various communities across the country.

His paintings are characterized by the fragmentation of their canvases, hand sewing pieces of paintings, drawings, and prints, onto which he sows shiny sequins. The themes in his work root back to the dotting patterns characteristic of the traditional festivals and religious carnavals of the Caribbean. Santiago has received honors from the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture and Unicaja Foundation in Malaga, Spain. His work is exhibited at Petrus Gallery and The Museum of the Americas in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
