N.M.A.S.S.
New Media Art & Sound Summit is a music and media art festival!
It's all about community and creative expression.
NMASS is a 3 day new media art and creative music festival in Austin that features cutting edge musical performances, new media art exhibitions, and workshops.
30 Artists, 3 days, Performances AND Workshops! Austin Texas Summer! YES!
We want to add a new festival to Austin's cultural milieu! It's a new KIND of festival!
The festival is intended to provide exciting, rich opportunities for the audience to engage in musical performances as well as education.
A typical music festival model uses investors for financial backing, speculating on profitable returns based on the ability to sell tickets.
NMASS uses a community based model!
The capitol to mount the festival is raised by this Kickstarter campaign.
We'll use the funds raised to pay the artists up front.
All curatorial, programming, and logistical staff are volunteers! The presenting organization (that's us, Church of the Friendly Ghost) DOES NOT pay itself from the festival. We do all the work on a volunteer basis!
Since the cost of the festival is provided by community support, and basic artist fees are paid upfront, the question is: What to do with the proceeds from admission charges?
Church of the Friendly Ghost is not going to pay itself out of the admission, so how about this: We'll split the proceeds between~
HAMM http://www.healthallianceforaustinmusicians.org
AND
The Sims Foundation http://www.simsfoundation.org/
We're utilizing the proceeds to support essential health infrastructure for hard working artists!
Here's how the festival will look:
N.M.A.S.S. will take place over three days at two separate venues.
During the day at the Salvage Vanguard Theater http://www.salvagevanguard.org/, featured performing artists will be conducting workshops and master classes while interactive new media art exhibits are presented either as installations or exhibits.
In the evenings, featured performances will take place at The United States Art Authority, http://www.unitedstatesartauthority.com/
Keynote speaker: Chris Schlarb http://www.chrisschlarb.com/
Featured Performers Include:
Dr. Eugene Chadbourne / Mark Southerland Trio /
Trio Tarana / Tatsuya Nakatani & Omar Tamez /
Slow Six / and many other Austin and Texas based musicians!
We announced the full roster 17th of May, 30 days from the festival, when the local proposal selections are chosen by the N.M.A.S.S. curator and interdisciplinary panel!
We'll feature 30 artists total over 3 days!
At THIS festival, community resources and grassroots philanthropy feed the economic growth and sustainability of the music and arts community, rather than an industry that all too often exploits that community!
Attendance to the festival itself constitutes an opportunity to give back to the artistic community WHILE having a truly great time discovering on the bleeding edge of new media art and creative expression in music!
You are not only invited attend this festival, but to be directly responsible for it's foundation!
This is an opportunity to take part in the creation of culture, and bring to bear a unique festival that we hope to create as an annual event in Austin!
The diverse range of artists performing over the three days, and the unique, intimate opportunities for education and engagement contribute the FRESH tone of this festival. Let's make it a new tradition!
The cost of admission, ( $12 ) will be far lower than any other comparable three day festival, and the official activities of the fest itself will be supplemented by unofficial cultural happenings and celebrations all around town related to the fest and organized by the highly active creative community here in Austin.
As an organization Church of the Friendly Ghost enjoys close community involvement with a large network of local artists and musicians.
We are making the project known to the network of creative institutions we're acquainted with in Austin. We have already received support from Art Seen Alliance, the Salvage Vanguard Theater, KOOP Radio and have gotten generous mentions from the Austin Chronicle, the Austinist and Austin 360. We hope that you can help us get the word out. The Church of the Friendly Ghost has always been about building a community of desire around shared goals and affections. We hope that others will find common goals with N.M.A.S.S, and assist us in spreading the word, and partner with us at the festival!
We will definitely let you know when and how the word is getting out!
We'll utilize our large social media network, while the featured national and international performers have all agreed to spread the word with their social networks!
Our heart is in this!
We hope will attract arts-minded lovers of adventurous culture from all around the country!
Thank you so much! Here's hoping you'll be as excited as we are about this!
Sincerely,
Aaron Mace, founder and director, Church of the Friendly Ghost
