A few new members and what we did--er, researched--over the weekend
So, firs things first: we added a few new members to the AUTOCULT advisory board over the weekend:
Joel Bednarz
Meliza Wells
The Hawk and Buzzard
Marlon Herft
Bob Petkofsky
We're so glad you joined us and we won't let you down. Think you're really gonna like what we're up to with this next issue of the magazine.
Speaking of which, we've been digging into a new/old obsession within the custom car world: vintage "flat bottom" boats! These are small, lightweight, fiberglass boats made from the late Fifties through the early Seventies and they all had one thing in common: monstrous hot rod motors! As our corner of car culture develops and matures, these little boats have become really popular with the intelligentsia. And with good reason: they're relatively cheap (compared to a vintage car), super easy to work on (not many moving parts beyond the engine), the motor is exposed – which means lots of chrome goodies to bolt to them, they're pretty quick and they can seat four to six fairly comfortably (which most custom cars can't do). And not that we have to say it, but they're a TON of fun! Which outweighs the heaviest of these little surface-of-the-water scooters by about 500 lbs.
These vintage flatbottoms, or "V-Drives," as they're sometimes called (because of the shape of the mechanism that transfers the power from the motor to the propeller) are being snapped up by some of the movers and shakers of the hot rod world and we're finally starting to see them en masse at car shows. We saw half a dozen of them at the Billetproof car show in Northern California on Saturday and then spent the day on Lake Tulloch out near Yosemite with two of them on Sunday. A big, shiny motor bolted to a slab of fiberglass? We're hooked!
But more importantly, we'll be the first magazine doing a full, beautiful feature on them. Now, to figure out how to NOT get the camera equipment wet, if not accidentally lost to the bottom of the lake...
