I want comics to be a part of Erie's Art Revolution, so I'm bringing 24 Hour Comics Day to my hometown for the first time!
24 Hour Comics Day (or 24HCD) is an annual event in which participants have 24 hours to create a 24-page comic book from scratch. It is a challenge for those who dream of creating a comic book, but find that their lives, jobs, school, families or whatnot leave them little time to do creative exploring on their own. It is a challenge for comic book professionals -who tell stories for a living- to hone their skills to a fine edge. It's a challenge for art students to delve into storytelling. It's a challenge for writers to understand what artists do. But most importantly, it's an invitation to someone who may have dreamed of making a comic book, but has never had an outlet in which to do so, and here to create in the company of other artists, well, it seems like it's another Comico or Valiant waiting to find the right people. In other words, it's an event for EVERYBODY!
I participated in 24HCD back in 2005 (while I was living in Austin, TX and satisfied my weekly four-color needs at Austin Books and Comics) and managed to finish 11 pages of a comic book called The Latter History and Subsequent Burning of Little Red Riding Hood ( It later became a full-fledged short story, but that's not important now), which was waaaay beyond my skill level to create, but at the time it didn't matter. I was racing the countdown and it was thrilling. I was doing what I had always wanted to do: make a comic book! Unbelievably cool but humbling and inspiring as well; not only to fall short of a goal (though lessons were learned), but also to meet the other amazing creators and see the day-to-day dedication to their craft that was so obvious in the work they produced. It's impossible to come away unaffected.
When I moved back to my hometown of Erie, PA in 2010, I lost a lot of access to the people and events I had grown accustomed to in Austin (Oh Drafthouse! How I miss you! But seriously, you're on my list of things to import. Be ready.). "Somebody should do something!" I often hear, but as my friend Kate sagely reminded me, "You are somebody." So, here I am, bringing my passion for comics and comic creation to my hometown via a 24HCD event (October 20 to October 21 if you want to sign up!). But I can't do it without your help.
I'm asking the Kickstarter community for $1500 to fund my project. The money will be used for the following:
Space Rental - The Pennsylvania Artists Cooperative Association has a stunning space that is literally surrounded by artists on all sides. I can't imagine a better atmosphere to work in.
Food and Drinks - I've been in contact with potential donors, but creators need food and drinks to keep themselves going. Should donations not happen, I still need to feed to talent.
Advertising - I have identified about 100 comic book stores and art programs within a 200 mile radius of Erie and will invite them and their clientele/students to come to Erie and create their hearts out. This will cover printing of posters, postcards and postage. Of course, I'm going local with the printing!
T-shirts - What's an event without a commemorative t-shirt, I ask you? The preliminary graphic that makes us laugh the most looks like this:
Postage - For the incentives!
Incentives - For the incentives!
Erie is on the verge of an Arts Revolution and I want to contribute to making my hometown a place of which people will say, "I did a really cool thing there!"
As October 20th draws closer, more information will be added to my website on a 24HCD page. Come and see!
Have a question? If the info above doesn't help, you can ask the project creator directly.
