"Gift a Rift" Contest is Live!

Update #8 · Aug 29, 2012 · 12 comments

We've narrowed down the submissions from over 100 to 5. Details for all of the finalists are below. You can cast your vote now at www.oculusvr.com/giftarift.

Voting is open to the public. The voting will close at the end of the Kickstarter campaign and the top two studios will receive an early, free Rift developer kit, courtesy of Oculus. We'll announce the winners the day after the voting closes.

On to the finalists (in no particular order)...

1. Phosfiend Systems

Website: www.fractgame.com

Prior Work: IGF Award Winning FRACT prototype, FLECT

Description: We want to make FRACT OSC that much better with the Oculus Rift. Not only will our unique 3D world benefit from the immersion, but it was early VR aesthetics that helped developer aspects of the art direction - its going to be a match made in heaven!

2. Guild Software, Inc.

Prior Work: Vendetta Online MMORPG Space Combat

Website: www.guildsoftware.comwww.vendetta-online.com

Description: We would like to add true 3D virtual realityto our space combat game Vendetta Online so it looks like you're really flying your spaceship around asteroids, stations, and dogfighting with other players.

3. Nnooo

Website: www.nnooo.com

Prior Work: Pop (WiiWare launch title), myNotebook, myPostcards, myDiary, escapeVektor: Chapter 1 and coming soon: Spirit Hunters Inc (DSiWare AR RPG) and escapeVektor (3DS and Vita)

Description: We would really like to prototype a new experience. As you can see by our work we don't do run of the mill games and sequels we try to tailor our games to the hardware we are working on. Pop was tailored to using the Wii Remote Pointer while Spirit Hunters Inc is an AR game tailored to the combination of Camera, Touch-screen and Realtime clock in the Nintendo DSi. With the Oculus I think it would be great to find ways to get people to experience things in a way which can only be done in virtual reality. We have some neat concepts which we would love to start prototyping.

4. Kinesthetic Games

Website: www.kinestheticgames.com

Prior Work: Our team has worked on a number of AAA titles, including “Fable 2, Fable 3, Fable: The Journey, Bodycount, Grid, Dirt, Dirt2, Black, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Battlefield 2: Euro Force, Eyepet & Friends”

Description: We want to integrate the Rift with our latest game Kung Fu Superstar which teaches players real martial arts and sets them on an epic journey to become Hollywood’s most popular stuntman. With the Rift we can put players right in the heart of the action.

5. Lee Salzman (On behalf of the Cube engine community)

Website: http://cubeengine.com

Prior Work:

Cube 1, game and engine
ENet, reliable UDP networking library originally developed for Cube 1
Assault Cube, game derived from Cube 1
Cube 2: Sauerbraten, game and engine
IQM - Inter-Quake Model format, open skeletal animation format for games, developed for Cube 2 and other games
Red Eclipse, Game derived from Cube 2
Tesseract, next generation engine and future game based on upgraded Cube 2 technology

Description:
The main use for the dev kit would be to work on support for the Oculus Rift into our recent games and engines like Red Eclipse, Sauerbraten, and Tesseract. Since these projects are open source, integration with such projects can both directly benefit users of these projects and also serve as a model for other open source or proprietary games and directly.

The Cube project has always been about interesting technologies that both enhance the playing experience for FPS gamers as well as make it much more fun to create content for these games. The Oculus Rift seems like it would make the deatchmatching experience much more engrossing and would be worth supporting.

      So, who won?

By this do the mean the head tracking will control the head and the mouse will control your hands/weapon. Because that is was is immerisive. The ability to move around while looking one way and shooting or interacting another is human. Like picking a lock but looking around while you did it. or running sidways down a hall and shooting to the right while you look straight to see where you are going and occasionally glance where you are shooting or vice versa.

My vote goes to Guild Software. 3D, VR, space dog-fighter? Heck, yes!

    4. Missing_small

Creator Ali Graham on August 30, 2012

I voted for Lee as a vote for open source as well.

    5. Fringe_avatar_steam.small

Creator Ricardo on August 29, 2012

Voted Lee Salzman, would be nice to have an open source engine with this integrated, this way everyone will benefit from it.

    6. Missing_small

Creator Justin Allen on August 29, 2012

Voted for Lee Salzman, as well. This way, we can have some open source example code, by the time we get our Dev kits.

I am voting for ”5. Lee Salzman (On behalf of the Cube engine community)” the cube technology is a nice to use solid open source game engine as you can see it has even been compiled to JS+WebGL by Mozilla see: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/demos/detail/bananabread

I went with Lee. It looks like their company could do a lot of good with the Rift.

Creator Carma on August 29, 2012

Yeah Synthesizers and the Rift! My vote goes to Phosfiend Systems.

    10. Missing_small

Creator Austin Butcher on August 29, 2012

I put my vote towards 'guild software'. The experience their game would give seems different from what is already planned on the rift.

Creator Commander Keen on August 29, 2012

Lee Salzman should get a rift. Honestly... the Cube 2 (Sauerbraten) engine technology is quite fascinating and it's open source too. :)

    12. Missing_small

Creator Lukas on August 29, 2012

Considering that there are 2 gift Oculuses (plural anyone?) I'd have thought we got 2 votes. Oh well.... :D Great idea in any case!
