Last December I got together with two friends to create a fundraiser to support community projects in our town of Braddock, PA. What resulted was www.obscuraegallery.org -- highlighting hidden beauty in a rust belt town full of "ruins" http://15104.cc/ruins.html by exhibiting photography concentrating on small details in the community.
Our goal was to create a way to fund other projects, encouraging creativity and artistic expression. Over 25 photographers joined our cause and submitted images to be included in a photo lottery. We paired each photograph with a handmade frame from locally reclaimed materials.
Funds from that event went to Braddock Redux, a non-profit public charity that aims to improve Braddock with local projects including a community oven, a mosaic garden, and creatively re-using existing buildings. Since then we have listed the images from the lottery in a web gallery. Funds from the online sales are being divided between the photographers and other local projects. This spring we were able to help start Delicious Donations, a mini grant for art projects in Pittsburgh, by supplying ingredients for their first event.
The second gallery exhibit and photo lottery will be this September. Funds raised through Kickstarter will help cover the costs of the event. From prints to snacks to promotions, the more costs that are covered up front the more money we can provide to Braddock Redux for new community and art projects.
We're offering up prints from a selection of Obscurae photographers (http://www.flickr.com/photos/obscuraegallery/sets/72157617744319867/) and a limited number of handmade frames for helping us reach our goal!
