New Mystics show "tomb" featuring work by No Touching Ground, NKO and Dan Hawkins at Gallery 4Culture April 2011
In the winter of 2009 the artist team consisting of NKO, No Touching Ground and photographer Dan Hawkins set out to create and document an installation in an abandoned warehouse in South Seattle.
This graphic and sculptural installation took place within the many rooms of the second floor of the abandoned warehouse which was slated for demolition. Emphasizing the architecture and mood of the building, the artwork was created as a memorial for the soon to be destroyed building. The artwork was completed in the spring of 2010 and left to rest undisturbed until demolition.
In the fall of 2010, the warehouse known as Sunny Jim's accidentally caught fire, burning for over 24 hours, and the demolition of what was left took place immediately afterwards. All that remains of Sunny Jim's Peanut Butter Factory are memories and a series of photos documenting the ghostly, ephemeral work that existed within it for a few months.
No Touching Ground, NKO and Dan Hawkins are now in the process of reinterpreting the work within a gallery setting. The re-envisioning of this work will include monumental size installation including the original documentary photographs printed life size and hand colored on 8'x8' and 8'x32' sections. The artists will install in a similar manner as in the abandoned warehouse - using wheat paste, printed graphics and spraypaint. Dan Hawkins photographic documentation of the installation process will be printed large scale and framed in custom light boxes. Field recordings from the site will also be incorporated. This show will take place April, 2011. Gallery 4Culture is a non-profit, non-commercial gallery associated with 4Culture, the King County arts commission.
Money from the KickStarter campaign will be used to fund construction of 7 8'x8' panels, oversize graphics printing, and the purchase of supplies and installation materials.
The graphic pieces and installations remaining from the show will be placed at the former Sunny Jim's site. This action will complete the work's cycle of veneration.
