A collaboration between zine-writer Steve Hughes and visual artist Jessica Frelinghuysen.
STUPOR is a collection of true stories. I gather them at one bar or another. I drink, I talk, and listen to the people around me. I write their stories. Then, I collaborate with a different artist on each issue. I’ve been doing it for 17 years now.
My new issue, UNFIXABLE is created in collaboration with the visual artist Jessica Frelinghuysen (studied at RISD, printmaking 2002).
Why UNFIXABLE? A lot of Jessica’s recent work is about creating uniforms or cool, unusual, wearable objects like helmets that are designed to fix some sort of social problem. They’re awkward but carefully rendered and actually really complicated. One Saturday afternoon, not long ago, I went to her Detroit studio and tried on her helmets and uniforms. It was a lot fun. We documented it in our video, so make sure you get a chance to watch it.
So yes, Why did I title this Stupor UNFIXABLE? It’s a response to Jessica’s work with tools. All the stories in this issue contain tools and describe situations that could use some fixing. Yeah, tools are for fixing things, but only in the right hands. In the wrong hands they can create worse problems. So the people in this Stupor are all using tools, some are trying to fix stuff, some are building disasters. Still the presence of tools gives them the opportunity to try, and that’s what seems important.
UNFIXABLE includes the following four stories: Nothing I Touch Turns to Shit, Collecting Sticks to Swing at Neighbors, No one Will Have Sex with You at the Emergency Room, and lastly, Pollution Snails.
The original artwork that Jessica has created for this issue is absolutely brilliant and very colorful. A black and white printing simply won’t do it justice. I want to print it in color. I want you to hold it in your hand and say, Damn, this might just be one of the nicest, most kick-ass zines I’ve ever seen. Here’s what I decided: I want to print a large run — 1000 copies in full-color and produced on an offset press. I want it to be on a nice 80# paper. Even though it’s only 12 pages, it will be substantial, and look absolutely fantastic on the back of your toilet.
Truly, this is a great opportunity to support a unique collaboration between an up-and-coming artist and a well-seasoned zine writer from the Motor City, and also to receive some great rewards for doing so.
Remember, there’s a reason that so many artists, including Matthew Barney, have collaborated with me. They dig my writing and they like my book. You should check it out too. Absolutely. Although it’s available on Amazon and my website Stuporzine.com and great locations, like Printed Matter in NYC, it’s also available to you at the reward level of $25, including UNFIXABLE and Matthew Barney’s WASHED IN DIRT.
At the $60 level you get the T-shirt too. The best, most unique shirt you’ll ever own. It’s brilliant red to reflect the color of the toolbox on the cover of UNFIXABLE. This American Apparel T-shirt is emblazoned with the Stupor Logo, the artwork of long-time collaborator Tim Hailey. I call the image the “Lose Lose Situation.” It’s an graphic that appears in every issue of Stupor. Here’s how it looks: Two naked guys with hats are swinging swords at one another. The guy on the right just lost his penis. The guy on the left just lost his head. Yes, a question for the debate team: Who wins in a lose lose situation? Answer: You do! It’s a fabulous head turning T-shirt, and it’s only available on Kickstarter!
If you watched the video you saw this print on the wall behind me and Jessica. It's an original. It's designed to be cut up and fit together and placed over one's ears to indicate they are listening even though they may be actually ignoring the talker. The fix here: No more pretending to listen to dull annoying people. You wear your “Listening Indicators” and it’s obvious they have your ear, meanwhile you can enjoy a drink and pay no attention to the talker. It's available at a very low reward level. Read more about it on her website paperhelmets.com
Also note, new to this campaign is the special collector's, commemorative Stupor beer Koozie. It’s available starting at the $25 level.
I hope you’ll support the color printing of Stupor: Unfixable.
