Two young people searching for adventure enter a home-made flying machine contest and end up finding each other.

I will be directing my Senior Thesis Project to complete my degree at SCAD. Near Misses is the story of two young people searching for adventure in an otherwise stagnant town. When a traveling Build-Your-Own Flying Machine Contest comes to town both Jean and Shep leap at the opportunity. Through a series of “near misses” the characters lives intertwine.

The film will be a visual poem. By not relying on dialogue the actors and the crew get the chance to really explore and play with the beautiful subtlety of every day life. I am so inspired by all of the possibility in life’s little moments. The build of tension between two people before they speak for the first time, what happens when we look down instead of maintaining that eye contact, and all of life's other "near misses".

By showcasing the beauty of everyday life I want to inspire the audience to see the potential in themselves and others. The way sawdust motes in a garage become glitter when illuminated by a work light, the spines of Old Books become art in a cave, and an old chair becomes the best of hugs. These little pieces of the story allow us in turn to reminisce about the little things in our own lives that sometimes might get overlooked.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

I think the biggest challenge will be pulling off the flying competition with such a limited budget. Even though it is a small town and a homemade flying machine contest it will still take a lot of production design and creative thinking to make it believable. Luckily I am surrounded by some of the most talented and creative students SCAD has to offer, and I'm confident that our team can work through all problems.
