A comic book zine that explores the possibilities within a neighborhood through the eyes & imaginations of a group of inspiring kids!
The Project
Milepost 33 is a comic
zine about a group of inspiring kids; their neighborhood; and the
projects that the kids envision & carry out with the support of
some great adults. Filled with discovery, exploration, and
experimentation, the zine winds through overgrown streams on a
homemade raft in search of whirligig beetles, through the world of
make-believe, straight into a neighborhood and its possibilities.
Milepost 33 challenges conventional thought in just the right way- by questioning the limitations which hold us back while illustrating potentials which are often invisible to us yet are at our fingertips.
The story is told through a mix of pen & ink illustration and what I will call "photograph panel puppetry" the use of photographed puppets to create comic book style puppetry which jumps from the pages of the zine.
Told in a bilingual English/Spanish format, this comic zine reaches many audiences while tapping into a wide range of positive potentials.
Funding: Will you be one of my 100?
My funding goal is $1500. Essentially, I am looking for 100 backers willing to pledge $15 each. With that level of support I will be able to focus the next two months of my life on creating and publishing the comic book, while knowing that my basic expenses (rent and food) are taken care of. Anything above the $1500 funding goal will allow for more copies of the comic book to be printed up and distributed, increasing the reach and impact of this inspirational neighborhood organizing tool.
I am a member of the Independent Publishing Resource Center, the IPRC, here in Portland, Oregon. When the comic book is ready, I will be able to physically create it myself, drastically reducing the cost of publishing, while achieving a quality final product.
