Canine focus group helps launch magazine.
Six years ago, two advertising agency veterans with a nose for originality, and a dogged determination to find a need and fill it, asked their dogs what they should do. In what is widely believed to be the first canine focus group in history, a panel of two Cockapoos, one MinPin, a Golden Retriever, one Siberian Husky and a bevy of neighborhood mixed breeds, were brought together under one woof, to share their opinions.
As their humans observed with amazement...
...these dogs from varied social backgrounds and breeding, all begged for something dog-centric to read. But it had to have style and art while being socially relevant to all dogs...and their dog loving human companions. From that storied evening, a unique lifestyle magazine combining the best of Dog, style and art, got a leg up, and found its legs, with no outside investment. Now we need a little help.
The first issue of THE NEW BARKER...
...was printed by pre-selling the concept to advertisers who believed in us enough to pay for their ads up front...in a magazine that didn't yet exist. 10,000 copies were distributed in November 2006. Through support from advertisers and subscribers, moral support from friends, loads of perseverance (and literally no time off), we have maintained brand integrity, while delivering on a promise to our readers and advertisers. It may seem like more, but it's basically two people putting this magazine together every three months—paying for printing, freelance help, parking tickets at events we are promoting—and putting a modest amount of food on our table. It's a labor of love, but as Jimmy Buffett sang in Trying To Reason With Hurricane Season—"I can't run at this pace very long." Funding this project will keep us running with the big dogs.
Where will the money go?
The project's main goal is to fund an increase in circulation to 50,000 per quarterly issue by the end of next year (2013). Distributing 12,500 magazines per quarter in each of the four major Florida market areas will enable us to provide greater exposure for our advertisers, increase fundraising opportunities for our rescue organizations, and generate more advertising revenue to keep the magazine going and growing. We have laid the groundwork for increasing distribution, ad sales and story development by nurturing a handful of talented and dedicated 'rover reporters' in the key markets of North Florida (Gainesville/Panama City/Jacksonville/St. Augustine), Central Florida (Orlando/Daytona/Melbourne), and South Florida (Palm Beach/Miami/Ft. Myers/Naples). Funding will also enable us to continue expanding and developing successful partnerships in Tampa Bay (Tampa/St. Pete/Sarasota). Most importantly, the money will pay for the printing and distribution necessary to meet these increased demands; allow for the expansion into a subscription-based digital edition which will be available online to print subscribers and fee-based digital subscribers; and expanded digital and print advertising sales. Moreover, funding will enable us to:
- Increase promotional opportunities for our advertisers.
- Increase fundraising donations for shelters and rescue groups. (THE NEW BARKER donated $27,900.00 in money, media space and in-kind services to rescue organizations in 2010/11).
- Compensate those loyal contributors who, to date, have donated their professional services and time, helping THE NEW BARKER grow into the quality publication it is today. This would facilitate the retention of key personnel and help in recruiting additional contributors as we grow.
- Create a more robust and interactive web presence to expand our brand's reach without compromising the content integrity of the print version.
- Continue to extend THE NEW BARKER as a brand. (It is a National and Florida Registered Trademark).
- Create communities to expand our brand’s reach.
- Increase advertising revenue exponentially.
- Increase distribution throughout the State.
- Increase paid subscription base.
