MUSIC PRODUCTION
Producing a house/techno track in Logic Pro 9 with vocals: Workshop
Calin Enache//District Sound Lab
Time: Sunday - 4/29 // 3:30 - 5pm
The idea behind this workshop is to have a crash course in the steps associated with producing a house track using Logic and recording a live vocalist. The class begins with getting all the parts together and designing sounds, then arranging, recording vocals, properly treating the vocals, mixing down, and mastering. This workshop allows an aspiring producer to be able to see the whole production chain, from A to Z. Questions and participation are welcome during any part of the process from beginning to end. Calin Enache is certified in Logic by Apple.
Producing a dubstep track in Ableton Live 8 and Native Instruments: Workshop
Mohamed Chalal and Shawn Shelton aka Digital Eyes//District Sound Lab
Time: Sunday - 4/29 // 5:15- 6:45pm
The class begins with getting all the parts together and designing sounds, then arranging, mixing down, and mastering all utilizing Ableton. This workshop allows an aspiring producer to be able to see the whole production chain, from A to Z. Questions and participation are welcome during any part of the process from beginning to end. Mohamed Chalal is an Ableton instructor at District Sound Lab and Shawn has been using it for many years.
Studio Acoustics Explained: Presentation
Calin Enache//District Sound Lab
Time: Sunday - 4/29 // 7:00 - 8:00pm
The absurd amount of marketing has aspiring producers convinced that expensive gear is the only way to achieve pro quality results. The truth is, however, that acoustics are the single most important part of a music studio. Acoustics, however, can be incredibly confusing and there is also a lot of misinformation on the internet, much of which is fueled by even more marketing. This workshop presets the fundamental principles of acoustics and how to implement them in a home studio. It will also demonstrate how to cheaply build simple but incredibly effective and pro quality acoustic panels instead of spending thousands of dollars on them.

Electronic Awakening is an ethnographic Documentary film which investigates the spirituality of the Electronic Dance Music Culture.
The film features dozens of experts, visionaries, and published authors who explore the premise that Electronic Music is spiritual technology that allows access to higher states of consciousness. Filmed over a period of 5 years at events such as Burning Man, Earthdance, LoveFest, Moontribe, Wicked, Shambhala and the Boom Festival in Portugal.
Electronic Awakening reviews rave's evolution from large-scale commercial events to smaller gatherings in remote locations. The film offers insight into the inner workings of the brain and its metaphysical connection to the repetitive beats that allow for that sense of oneness, unity and freedom that millions feel on the dance floor. It also investigates this culture’s significance to the prophecies of 2012, how this bizarre and sacral relationship to electronic music has evolved the group over time, and where it all seems to be leading them.
With world-renowned artists such as Shpongle, The Crystal Method, Vibrasphere, Random Rab, Phutureprimitive, Androcell, Bird of Prey, Sheff, Jason Knight, Govinda, Gladkill, Desert Dwellers, Eastern Sun, Solar Fields, Grouch, Satsi and many more...

Interactive Music Installations: Workshop
William Brent//American University
Time: Saturday - 4/28 // 2:15 - 3:15pm
The task of mapping relationships between sound synthesis parameters and a physical source of control has become very approachable in recent years. As a result, artists with a wide range of technical experience can pursue the design of novel digital musical instruments. This three hour workshop will focus on widely available options for achieving mappings between synthesized sound and physical performance gestures as captured by a variety of sensors. Sources of control data to be covered include: built-in laptop hardware, multitouch surfaces, the Wii remote, the PS3eye camera, and the Kinect sensor. If possible, participants should bring laptops installed with standard software development tools and Pure Data (Pd)—a programming environment for synthesis and multimedia. Using DILib—a new Pd library for simplifying access to physical control streams—we will explore the workings behind instruments that make use of accelerometers, multitouch surfaces, infrared fingertip tracking, and full body tracking. This workshop uses Open-Source Software.
