About this project

I want anyone to be able to have their own pet jellyfish.  Through Kickstarter, I’m proud to introduce the Desktop Jellyfish Tank.  It’s the first affordable aquarium designed specifically for jellyfish and it’s as easy to maintain as a regular fish tank.  Now Kickstarter donors can pre-order the first tanks that get produced.

Jellyfish can’t go in a regular fish tank because they get sucked into the filtration intakes and liquefied.  I started a business called Jellyfish Art experimenting with different tank designs in my cousin’s garage until I figured out how to retrofit an existing fish tank to be suitable for jellyfish.  It was a challenging and lengthy process, but it allowed me to start selling the first edition desktop tanks online at jellyfishart.com.  Lots of people loved these tanks, but I still wanted a design I could control from the bottom up that would be specifically designed for jellyfish.  Now after spending a year developing prototypes, I’m proud to finally launch this new Desktop Jellyfish Tank.  It comes with everything you need to get started and Kickstarters have the chance to place pre-orders at a discounted price by donating $350.  Kickstarters get a voucher worth $50 redeemable towards jellyfish and food from our website.

Jellyfish Art is based out of San Francisco and has been featured in:

NY Times - LA Times - ABC - NBC - CBS - NPR - Boston Globe - Many More

Our new Desktop Jellyfish Tank design won Best New Aquarium Product at this year’s Global Pet Expo trade show.

I need your support to get this tank professionally manufactured and available for purchase.  The capital raised on Kickstarter will help get the first batch of tanks produced to meet the minimum order quantity of our factory.  If we meet our goal, we should be able to have the first tanks available within a few months.  Thank you for checking out the Desktop Jellyfish Tank page!

Pre-order the Desktop Jellyfish Tank for a pledge of $350 or more and you will be guaranteed to receive it once the first batch of tanks has been manufactured. Kickstarter donors get a $50 voucher redeemable towards the Beginner's Package (normally $149), which includes 3 Jellyfish and a package of Frozen Food.

  • In both the wild and in captivity, jellyfish live about a year.  In the wild, this is kept constant by seasonal cues.  Larvae called ephyrae appear in the spring, grow to adults throughout the summer, then produce new larvae called planulae in the fall before dying off.  Over the winter, the planulae morph into polyps which will produce ephyrae in the spring.

  • No, it is virtually silent.  A small air pump produces a light stream of air bubbles that powers the water flow.  You can only hear these if there is no other noise and you're standing right next to the tank.

  • Yes, you can!  Hermit crabs and cleaner snails are currently available on our website as accessory animals to the jellyfish.  We have also kept clownfish and blennies successfully with jellyfish.  The only animal we have kept that is not compatible with jellies is cleaner shrimp because they do their job and steal food from the jellyfish.  Customers are continuously experimenting with new species and posting pictures on our Facebook fan page: http://www.facebook.com/JellyfishArt

  • It's unlikely.  Jellyfish have a complicated life cycle so they usually require extensive equipment to breed in captivity (for more info see: http://www.jellyfishart.com/kb_results.asp?ID=12).  However, occasionally customers get jellyfish spontaneously breeding in their desktop tanks.  Some of these "baby" jellyfish can be seen in photos and videos on our website: http://www.facebook.com/JellyfishArt

I have a degree in biology and environmental science from Duke. I love the ocean and am fascinated by the creatures living in it. I've been living in San Francisco since college developing the Desktop Jellyfish Tank. It's been my dream for a long time to bring this product to market and I hope Kickstarter can help make it happen!
