I am preparing an exhibition in an abandoned convent in Brooklyn, NY exploring concepts of concentration and the poetics of noticing.
In a few short weeks, I will present an exhibition in an abandoned and deteriorating convent space in Brooklyn, New York with an impressive roster of contemporary artists. Four stories of creaking floorboards, connected by a classic spiral staircase with wooden banister, long hallways, quarters for its nuns, and a modest chapel with stained-glass windows provide the setting for an exhibition about the concepts of noticing and contemplation in art and the art making process, inspired by Allan Kaprow's proposition, what if art is just about paying attention.
The participating artists have all encouraged in a quiet or unpretentious way the act of noticing, of pausing in our routine comings and goings. Their work comes in the form of images, words, temporal sculptures and replicas of something we take for granted.
This is an entirely independent endeavor with no outside gallery or museum backing. I kindly ask for your support to cover costs of printing, installation and prep work (the floors could use a good scrub), electrical pieces (many of the bulbs are out), and odds and ends to bring this show to life.
I welcome you to be part of something truly special. In return for your generous contributions, you will receive a warm thank you and a gift.
Looking forward to seeing you for the opening on Saturday, May 14, 2011.
