A Better Way to Store Your Instrument

If you're like most guitar or bass players, you want your instrument to be stored safely out of the way while remaining easily accessible. Currently, there are two main types of guitar/bass supporting products on the market: stands and wall hangers. Stands support guitars well but take up lots of space and are often easy to tip over if you bump into them. Wall hangers get the guitar out of the way, but many people consider a guitar on the wall to be an unattractive choice. To those renting apartments, drilling into the wall also makes traditional wall hangers quite impractical.

For many, this relegates their guitar to being leaned against the wall in the closet, or tucked away in a case where it's difficult to get to on short notice. That's why we invented this very special guitar/bass hanger. It hangs in your closet, just like a hanger for a shirt or pants would. It hangs the guitar parallel to the clothing, so it takes up as little space as possible.

Here we go again

If you're thinking you've seen this project before, it's because you have. Last time this project ran, it didn't reach its funding goal. After receiving a number of emails asking if there was any other way to purchase the hanger, I decided to give this project some more attention. I've found a new supplier that is willing to produce a smaller batch, meaning I've been able to lower the cost and the project goal. To lower the project's goal further, I've covered the majority of the startup cost myself. This project will cover the last bit of first production run and help to pay for the website to get setup.

Funding

This product currently exists as only a few prototypes. If it doesn't reach its goal, it will not be produced. Why so? Well, if I made these by hand, I'd lose money selling them at $20 (shipped). To lower costs, we're trying to outsource production and do all of the assembly in-house (literally in a house, ha!). So if you're wondering if you should get one now or later, remember that it may be now or never. We appreciate all of your support and know you'll love this simple but useful gadget.

Turn the closet into a safe, compact place to store all of your valuable instruments. Want to hide your acoustic in your office? No problem, tuck it in right next to your coats. Moving into a dorm and want your room mate to keep their grubby mitts off of your baby? Just hide it away in the closet!

These even provide an interesting new way to keep inventory at music stores. Instead of expensive custom wall fixtures, you can mount a steel bar and use a few of these hangers to display your instruments. Since they rotate out (just like a coat hanger), it's easy to pick one guitar out even when others are hanging right next to it!

The Mechanics of it

Of course this design looks very simple, but to design something like this is not as easy as making a loop with a hook to hang it from. You have to consider how the hanger will react to the weight of the instrument. The wire form that makes up the structural part of the hanger is designed such that the weight of the instrument actually tilts the "C" shaped neck holder up, making the neck slip firmly into the holder, thus reducing any chance of a mishap.

The hanger effectively has 2 hooks at the top instead of 1. So why do this instead of a single hook like a coat hanger? Well, by adding a 2nd supporting hook, the hanger becomes tremendously more stable. This allows the use of multiple hangers in a row without any concerns of instruments spinning and hitting one another. All you need to do to remove an instrument is pull the neck towards you and slide it off the hanger.

Fitment and Construction

This hanger is designed to fit most electric and acoustic guitars and basses. It supports necks up to 60mm (2.36") wide, but tapers down to 50mm (1.97") wide for a better fit on smaller instruments. If your guitar fits on a conventional wall hanger, it will absolutely fit on this. The hanger provides 259mm (10.19") of clearance to the top of the headstock and hangs 288mm (11.34") below the hanger rod. The hanger is designed to fit hanger rods up to 40mm (1.57") in diameter.

Each hanger is constructed from 1/4" diameter cold-drawn carbon steel. After the hanger's frame is formed, a textured black powder coat finish is baked on for excellent scratch protection. Finally, a rubber sleeve and plastic cap are added to protect your instrument from scratches.
Packaging

Each hanger is individually wrapped in a padded envelope. Hangers are shipped in a box (not individually packaged) to ensure they are not damaged in transit.

So Why Design A Guitar Hanger?

I love new design projects. Sure, designing a complex machine is very rewarding, but often finding a simple solution to a common problem is just as rewarding. There's beauty in simplicity, after all. I was tossing around different ideas for new projects, and this was one of the few that made everyone say "wow, I'd use that!" So I put the more complex projects on hold and decided to have a little fun with this idea.

My roots are in custom guitar building, but being around the automotive industry has put me in touch with manufacturers all over the globe. Mixing those two fields to create a piece like this felt like a very natural progression. My hopes are to get back into guitar building in the near future. This seemed like a great place to start..
