About this project

What we're doing

The Jupiter Deluxe has completed all the tracking for our full length LP and are nearing the finish line.  This includes the critical post-production steps of mixing and mastering all the material. You can sample and comment upon some extremely great work-in-progress mixes above!

We will also be pressing vinyl records, some CDs and making the music available for purchase online.  We have estimated this to cost us $2,000, and we are asking for your help in making it happen.

The tracks are currently being mixed at Hoboken Recorders, where we produced our EP four years ago.  We decided to stick with what works. The single from that release, "Faceplant," has been played on FM and Internet radio and was recently featured on the season finale of NY INK during a pivotal three minute montage.  The timing of this couldn't be better, as we hope new fans will seek out our music following the 7/21 airing.

What's our plan?

We are shooting to have this project ready to be pressed by September 15, 2011.  That means all the mixing and mastering completed by the end of August.  We will be using the funds we collect here to pay Hoboken Recorders and to order physical copies of the record.

How does this work?

The way Kickstarter works is simple.  As a backer, you pledge a certain amount of money towards the project.  If we don't reach our goal of $2,000 we won't get anything, so we need (and appreciate the heck out of) everyone's support! You can make these donations through Amazon.com.  Your account won't be charged until the end of the campaign, or once we've reached our goal...whichever comes first!

FAQ

  • We are inspired largely by the classics--bands like Queen, Cheap Trick, AC/DC, The Beatles, The Faces, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. These were all huge guitar-driven, analog-era bands whose recordings still sound best on the lacquer. We figure if we are going to make anything physical at this point, we better make it count!

  • When his band Neon Thrills broke up in 2005, frontman Mark Rinzel became another orphan of the New York City scene. Lost in a sea of $90 haircuts, Rinzel discovered fellow wayward Guided By Voices-fan Colin Grubb (guitar), who had just moved to New York for no good reason, in a basement on Stanton Street. The two liked each other.

By some stroke of extreme good fortune, drummer Tommy DeVito fell into the mix through a short-lived, ridiculously-named Led Zeppelin-tribute band (The Back Door Men) the boys had thrown together. After a successful rendering of Zeppelin's II at Arlene's Grocery, the group decided to work on their own material. The Jupiter Deluxe formed in February 2006. A debut EP release in early 2008 put the band on the map, and a theme-song commissioned by VH1 came soon after. The single from that EP, "Faceplant," was recently featured on the season finale of NY INK

In the summer of 2009, Rinzel produced an unnofficial, unnauthorized Matador Records Tribute show in Brooklyn. This was little more than an excuse to play a set of GBV tunes, and it was great fun. It also brought Wisconsin-bred wunderkind Waylan Daniel (bass) and longtime friend and Neutron Drivers tunesmith Mike Cecchini (guitar) into the group.

The result? A hybrid of select 60's/70's vinyl classics, with a healthy dose of indie-rock self-awareness for good measure. You'll hear traces of The Beatles, AC/DC, Oasis, Cheap Trick, The Kinks, Sugar, Guided By Voices, Big Star, Tom Petty, Raspberries, The Animals, The Jam, The Who, Badfinger, David Bowie, U2, T. Rex, The Knack, The Stone Roses, and The Verve. You may wonder why no one else bothered to throw all that together for you. Or you may just be grateful they did.

The Jupiter Deluxe specializes in sky high power rock, four part vocal harmonies, and epic melodies in the vein of Cheap Trick, Queen, and early-70s Who at their most thunderous. Like the best Rock n' Roll bands, The Jupiter Deluxe is greater than the sum of its individual members. It helps that its individual members are greater than the sum of most bands.
