A documentary film of Haiti and its art.

I am seeking funds to direct a film about Haiti and its art. The country is the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. Haiti was the first Republic to win its independence from slavery yet the majority of the people are living in a state of bondage. Billions of dollars in foreign aid were pledge to the island after the earthquake but the little money the country have received has done nothing. I once heard someone say Haiti's continuous hardship is the effect of its celebration of vodou (voodoo). I plan on taking a trip to Haiti(my home country) in December to film this documentary. I hope to pose questions and find solutions. I was in Haiti three months after the earthquake. The pictures below is a sample of the photo documentary I did on the country. This will be the film version of the photos. There have been numerous documentaries done on Haiti and vodou. My version takes a particular twist because I was born there and I am looking at Haiti's art and how it reflects the culture, history and current economic conditions. As a Haitian American and as a human being, this project is very dear to my heart and I am very committed to seeing it through. Thank you for taking your time to read this.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

The first challenge is getting the right equipment to film and produce the documentary to where it looks and feels professionally done. The second challenge is handing the logistics of filming in Haiti. I was born in Haiti and I have done photo- documentaries. I went to Haiti three months after the earthquake as a photojournalist. My skills as a director and my understanding of Haiti will help me overcome the second challenge. Once I get the financial backing, I will be able to overcome the first challenge. 40% of the cost to make the documentary will go into equipment: cameras, lighting instruments, microphones, software. 20% will go into transportation/ hiring local guides to properly and safely navigate around Haiti. 10% will go into government permits and 30% will go into post production: film editing, obtaining music rights, manufacturing of DVD. Thank you for any support you can offer!
