Louis Ortiz didn’t own a suit before all this happened. He didn’t have a job. He didn’t have much hope. Then one day he looked in the mirror and saw the most powerful man on the planet. The next thing he knew, he was being flown around the world to make appearances as President Barack Obama. He soon found out it was both a blessing and a curse - looking like one of the most monumental figures in recent history also made him a lightning rod for people’s pent up feelings. The Audacity of Louis Ortiz is a feature length documentary that will follow phone-technician-turned-presidential-impersonator Louis Ortiz through the 2012 election.
Louis’ story is a quintessential American one: Make the most of the opportunities that life hands you. But it’s also a story that’s completely unique. Louis has an unvarnished perspective on what our country has been through in the last 3 years, and the situation we’re in now. And he’s struggling to get by, just like a lot of other people in America right now. In the process, he has to reinvent who he is.
Louis’ “first term” forms the basis of a story I reported for a recent episode of This American Life. Please take a listen. Those stories and others will likely form act 1 of the film, but Louis’ story is still unfolding. The stakes are higher in 2012, and it’s anyone’s guess what’s in store.
I've been filming Louis since May 2011, but now I need your help to be able to follow Louis wherever he may go – at live appearances, overseas film shoots, at home with his family. The money I’m asking for is only a small fraction of the total budget, but at least it will ensure that I don’t miss any key moments in Louis’ story over the next few months.
