About this project
Dear potential Kickstarter backers, facebook friends, fellow tweeters and occupiers of space between the real and virtual.
WITH YOUR HELP I can continue to build and develop my work in new ways. I love to be able to put my work outside as well as in galleries. Some of these works are designed to do just that, be out in the woods for a short time and then go to the gallery space to tell their story.
So, WHAT AM I PROPOSING? I want realize some new works inspired by life in the woods of the early 20th century and before and the materials of today. The project explores ideas of wilderness, movement and shelter. It is informed by the idea that a relationship with a wilderness is largely mediated by materials, advertising, fiction, romance and movies (to name a few) It’s all bound up in a cross-fertilization of the tradition of landscape, the sublime and resource exploitation.
AN OUTLINE OF THE WORKS I WANT TO MAKE:
1) A large scale wall based text work. Each of 265 letters will be hand cut, hemmed and sewn from International Orange fly fabric.
2) A green neon text (to be placed in the woods).
3) A red neon text (to be placed in the woods).
4) A sculpture designed to take many forms including a shelter (cast Aluminum and fly fabric) This is the one I will take to the woods.
5) A semi freestanding sculpture made of cast aluminum and gold.
6) A cast aluminum sculpture based on a campfire
7) Hand carved sculpture in Cedar and European Oak
Okay, so the new work I want to make means that I’m going to have to employ the help of some outstanding professionals for some aspects of the production. This is where you come in. I need to raise the money to get these items made, buy some specialist materials and skills.
I’ll need to get the trunks and limbs of some trees (responsibly sourced) cast in aluminum and I need to get some neon bent. I don’t have the facilities to do these things in my studio.
I also need to buy some gold leaf and some beautiful orange fly fabric.
WHERE WILL YOUR MONEY GO?
Mostly it will go into producing the aluminum sculptures. Nearly all the cost is wrapped up in making the molds (the actual cost of the aluminum and casting is relatively very small). Bending the neon and providing the power transformers.
I need more than I'm hoping to raise through kickstarter. I am writing to a number of arts funding bodies to raise a further $24,065. The more I can raise the better the work will be. But $6,000 means I can make a really good start and realize at least 3 of the pieces to start. It will also help me meet the minimum funds raised by other means required by some funding bodies and prove to the them that the project is well supported which is a big boost toward gaining their support.
When I've made the work I'll take sculpture number 4 (above) out into the woods and live in it whilst working on it for a week. I'll install the neon texts in the woods for the same period at the same time and bring them back richer as a result. (This will also allow me to make some great photographs). I'll then bring all the pieces together to make a complete new body of work.
I am working toward getting the new work and the previous work together into a single exhibition for 2011/2012.

Send MessageI am a self represented visual artist working working between Europe and North America. My materials include tent technology, neon, cast aluminium and natural materials. I have shown internationally and in 2009 was nominated for a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship and was an invited artist in residence on the Island of Inishturkbeg off the west coast of Ireland. In 2008 I received a Grant for the Arts Award from the Arts Council England. As well as working as an artist I have, over the last three and a half years been the primary carer for my 4 year old daughter.
The sculptures I build are temporarily installed on small islands before I take them to the gallery space.
My work has been shown alongside that of artists such as Turner prize winner Martin Creed, Bob & Roberta Smith, David Blandy, Sarah Lucas, Scarlett Hooft Graafland, and photographers Roger Vale and Lukas Werth.
