About this project
THE STORY
THE SOUND AND THE SHADOW begins with HAROLD, a lonely recluse, spying on his neighbors. Microphones poke out of his windows in all directions, eavesdropping on the private moments and conversations of unknowing people in the loud and colorful neighborhood of Echo Park. When Harold’s five-year-old neighbor (PEARL) goes missing, Harold discovers that his audio recordings might hold a key piece of evidence in Pearl’s disappearance. Looking to add some adventure to her life, Harold's new tenant (ALLY) decides that she and Harold will find Pearl through their own detective work. With Harold’s intimate understanding of sound, along with Ally’s fearlessness, the two unlikely partners risk their lives to find Pearl. “The Sound & The Shadow” evokes genuine comedy and heart from the odd pairing of Ally and Harold. But as they pursue suspects, true danger follows their every move, and they must learn to trust one another in order to solve the case and survive.
FROM THE DIRECTOR
I wrote THE SOUND AND THE SHADOW with my good friend Sam Zvibleman while living in a very loud Echo Park neighborhood. Spending my days in a colorful, dilapidated Los Angeles bungalow, my imagination was ignited by the orchestra of sounds seeping through the thin stucco walls. I realized that much of how we identify and experience our homes and neighbors exists beyond the realms of sight and interaction. It lives in assumptions made in the music we hear each other play, the bits of muffled conversation and laughter, and the taboo love making and arguments.
The idea for THE SOUND AND THE SHADOW was born from these sounds and inspired by the characters of this neighborhood. And with a little invention, a great story was written. THE SOUND AND THE SHADOW examines the very nature of our homes -– how we live, love, and hide inside of them.
