We are a collaborative project space expanding our efforts into a community cafe in Battambang, Cambodia.
We are a collaborative project space in Battambang, Cambodia’s second largest city. We started one year ago helping people get together to realize their ideas for social ventures, local businesses and the arts, one project at a time.
With your help we want to kick our work into high gear by creating a social enterprise cafe to host and grow our community of projects and show what networked creativity can do, even in challenging environments.
How does the Kinyei cafe work
Kinyei enables creativity
- Individual / group has idea: business, art, social
- Kinyei Cafe provides open space, information resources, know-how, local and remote collaborators, all critically rare in Cambodia.
- Individual / group joins Kinyei network of creators, making it an even more powerful agent for idea incubation and social change.
What’s been done so far
Kinyei started over a year ago, supporting individuals in Cambodia to realise their own ideas for the future by coordinating local and international collaborations, virtual mentoring, hosting open workshops and doing one-on-one coaching. We’ve supported concerts, documentary projects, animators, poetry workshops and social media seminars on a shoestring, all by fostering local, international and virtual linkups of creative folks.
The cafe building already hosts a successful grassroots peer-learning programme and co-working space that serves as a base for fledgling film, dance and community development groups. We know this kind of facilitation works, and produces amazing things.
Ideas Café: bigger, better, more permanent
What started as ad-hoc support for small social ventures and innovative projects has grown into a energetic fledgling community of doers and makers which requires resources in order to sustain and grow itself. To supply these resources in a self-sufficient way, we’re adding a social enterprise café component to the project.
The cafe will cater to foreign and Khmer tastes, generating a bit of cash to make the space independent of the need for donations. It will draw in more people from more diverse backgrounds who can view exhibitions, engage in unconferences and workshops, and generally turn Kinyei from a project-to-project facilitation experiment into a thriving, cross-pollinating community of artistic, social and entrepreneurial collaborations.
Kickstarter for Café
With funds from a Kickstarter campaign we’ll be able to smarten up our space, procure a fine looking refurbished espresso machine, and train and salary four local staff to run a thriving ideas cafe.
Your contribution will get some real mileage here in Cambodia. Most of the renovations are complete but we’ve still got some rewiring, tiling, sink and toilet installations, cementing, painting, tools such as an internet connection capable of supporting video conferencing and staff training that can all be done with remarkably minimal funds.
Why a cafe?
What’s selling coffee got to do with helping creative projects? A whole lot, actually. What is critical for the generation of productive collaborations is a social space where people feel welcome to come, be, meet and share. A cafe is the perfect tool for this in Cambodia, a natural meeting place for both foreigners and locals, a common ground on which people and cultures can meet, and, importantly, one which can operate sustainably for years to come.
What will you do if you raise more than your target?
The Cafe’s core programs are the first port of call for additional funds; virtual collaborations, open workshops, unconferences and exhibitions. Once we have the cafe infrastructure in place we anticipate that it will be able to support its own ongoing costs so we’re excited to fast-track the events that make up the soul of the project!
What can I do to get more involved?
If you find yourself in Battambang the open classroom program is always looking for passionate people to drop by and run a workshop; you can watch the Kinyei site for our upcoming virtual tutoring project, and you might consider remotely supporting any of the projects which are currently working with Kinyei with volunteer help or mentorship.
Have a question? If the info above doesn't help, you can ask the project creator directly.
