I am working to raise production funds for my next short film "Nasceu Maria." This will be my MFA Thesis at NYU's Tisch Graduate Film Program. The screenplay received the 2010 Spike Lee Fellowship Award.
Maria is a single mother, recently immigrated from Brazil to NYC where she works as a nurse to support herself and her aspiring artist boyfriend, Fabiano. In return for her support, he looks after her young daughter Renata. This works fine until opportunities begin to spring up in the art world for Fabiano, revealing that Maria's survival in NY is more precariously balanced than she imagined.
When a rare weekend outing with her daughter goes terribly wrong, Maria finds herself stranded on the Midtown's streets; having lost her purse and in it her wallet, cellphone and keys. To make matters worse, Renata needs to use the bathroom. Desperate for a solution Maria sneaks her daughter into the employees only section of a closing department store. It seems everything will be fine until they emerge to find themselves locked in to a couture room on the empty 3rd floor.
Maria starts to lose her grip amid the ball gowns, but as reality slips away, she manages to engage Renata in a dress up fantasy where they are the princess and queen of their own private carnaval. The terrifying circumstances become a bonding experience for mother and daughter like no other.
From the day my mother approached me with the story idea NASCEU MARIA has been 3 years in the making, but we still need to raise most of the budget through donations so CAMERAS CAN'T ROLL WITHOUT YOUR SUPPORT!
Please give what you can to help bring our vision to life; not just mine but that of the entire team of dedicated young artists (actors, cinematographers, costume designers, producers etc.) who are lending their time and talents to this film. But most importantly please pass this link along and share it with other lovers of the arts to keep the love flowing!
Thank you to everyone who supported MARIACHI this film will be a direct result of all the amazing lessons I learned making that film and sharing it with audiences all over the country last year!
Nasceu Maria is fiscally sponsored by Fractured Atlas (a 501(c)(3) public charity) if you would like to make a tax deductible donation online, or continue to give after the kickstarter deadline is up, you can do so at: https://www.fracturedatlas.org/site/contribute/donate/3772
