Official Update #16

Update #25 · Dec 17, 2012 · 7 comments

Greeting Backers!

We hope you are all enjoying your time off school and work, should you be of course. Apologies for not posting this update last night. Our area was hit with a freak storm which knocked out our power till the early hours of the morning.

For this update, we wanted to share some more of E.o.E.'s lore. Below you will find details on the "Indar" which are powerful creatures that live in the World of Rivera. Each Indar has their own corresponding month of the year in which they are in control. We hope you enjoy reading about them and please let us know which of them appeal to you! There are 12 in all, so we plan to release a little information on a few over the next couple updates.

________________________________________________________________

Rivera has a winter, spring, summer, and fall. The legend goes that when Reia created Rivera, she created twelve caretakers of the world. These were the Indar. In the Time of Harmony, the Indar shepherded the world through its seasons. When mankind brought the world to the brink of destruction, Reia created the Great Eirin which granted man the power to save themselves. Unfortunately, man misused the power and the world fell into the Dark Period. The Great Eirin were sealed away from man, save for the Eternal Maiden. Four of the Indar were bound to the Great Eirin, one for each element to test and guide an Eternal Maiden through the pilgrimage she undertakes to gain their power.

The ties that bound the other Indar to their cycle broke, and they wandered the world causing added mayhem and destruction. Worst of these was The Stygian, the Lord of Death who ruled over winter. As the legend goes, he remained unconquered until the Eternal Maiden Gwendoline the Good finally subjugated him in 0 E.O.E. at the cost of her own life.

It is said that the four Great Magi created a kind of magic user called SUMMONER, whose task would be to regain control over the Indar and bind them to their original tasks. However, the powers of the Great Magi were sealed away before they had a chance to give summoners total mastery and ability to contain the Indar. Through the years, some would be born with the power to bind and control the Indar. It made little difference. Destroying them offered no hope, either. Any time the Indar were defeated, their bodies would dissipate, but in time they would reform, emerge, and continue to wreck havoc.

As the Dark Period raged on, an Eternal Maiden named Hexia created the oubliette - a prison which once again bound the Indar to the cycle of the planet and kept them locked into it. Twelve oubliettes were created and twelve of them were ultimately filled. It is not known what role the Indar have in the cycle of the world now or really ever did. How much of this is legend? How much of this is fact? The chaos and the tragedy of the Dark Period is such that none can say. All that is known is that the Indar do exist, as do the oubliettes which contain them.

The spirits of the lesser Indar can be evoked by any born with the summoner power. The others have to be found and their spirits tapped into directly, a process often times fatal to the summoner. This tends to keep those greater Indar contained and left alone. These summons are called aspects - for they are not truly the Indar, but rather reflections of the actual beings. Make no mistake: the aspects themselves are still perilously potent in power. Summoning is a dangerous art and too many calamities in this era can be laid at the feet of summoners who used their power for ill or lost control of their aspects. The most powerful Indar and the very worst, such as The Stygian, were hidden away and none living today know where their oubliettes are to be found. This is a good thing, and it is a fool or madman who says otherwise.

Arkady the Magnificent, first Emperor of the Basque Empire, established a calendar based on the cycle of legend. It is the standard for the world, even in Fornal (at least so far as those from outside that untamed land can tell).

Since we are still in the fall, here are a list of the fall months in Rivera and a description of their affiliated Indar:

FALL MONTHS

Erditu

Kalabaza

Segalari

FALL INDAR

Name: Erditu

Power: Earth Magic

One of the Three Sisters of Harvest, she is oriented toward the right and wields a pitchfork. Erditu’s call is the battle cry to all to begin preparing for the harvest and making preparations for winter. Destruction and fighting at such a delicate time is abhorrent to her, as she firmly believes all will must be bent toward survival.

Name: Kalabaza

Power: Fire Magic

The Artist Who Paints With Fire, Kalabaza appears as a painter waving a brush in the air. The brush has a head of flame and trails fire behind it. It is said that originally, when the time came, the land simply turned over toward winter without any sign. Kalabaza’s heart wept at such loss, and dedicated himself to creating beauty and grace for the final moments of nature’s cycle. It is Kalabaza who paints the leaves and landscapes different colors, using a painter’s brush made of flame to create different colors and effects.

 Name: Segalari

 Power: Air Magic

Segalari appears as a black cloaked hooded figure, though no limbs or extremities can be seen. Segalari is the end of things, and was once considered a pair with The Stygian. The myth goes that Segalari walks the land, breathing in all life (the last of fall), and then leaving behind him a trail of decay (the first days of winter). Uncorrupted like The Stygian, Segalari is neither good nor evil. He is simply an indifferent force of nature doing what he must.

Everything is progressing well with development and we are still on schedule for all our internal "Due Dates." We really do appreciate how patient you have all been. We are really busy everyday working on E.o.E. that whole months seem to slip by without talking to you all!

That's it for this update. Look for our next update sometime before the end of this year. We will try very hard to have more things to show you!

Quick Update!

Update #24 · Nov 18, 2012 · 16 comments

Hello everyone!

I hope you all have had a great week!

This weeks update will be brief, but I'm positive you will like it! But before we get into things, I wanted to ask if anyone got a Wii U today? Today, November 18th, is the North American launch date for Wii U, and I am very excited to have gotten mine! I happen to be a very big Nintendo fanboy, so I am always there day one to pick up their new consoles. So what about you? What is your opinion on the system?

Now to the meat of the update. Attached below is a screenshot showing our new graphics! We hope you will enjoy them. Something you may notice is that the graphics are now in 16 bit. This was a change that we decided to make for not only budget reasons, but also because there is just something special about this style of graphics. As far as I am concerned, these graphics are every bit as beautiful as 32 bit graphics, and maybe even a little better. (Bear in mind that these are still being worked on and their is not too much variety in the screen, but that will change in the coming weeks )

Before we go, we wanted to thank you all for your great comments last week. It was nice to read your gaming stories and your opinions on those topics. Your responses will help to lead us toward more believable characters while also avoiding a lot of the pitfalls common in RPG games.

We hope to be able to supply you with a steady stream of screens and sneak peeks from now on. We can't wait to show you all what we have been working on!

Well, I was able to sneak away from Wii U just long enough to write this update, now back to New Super Mario Bros!

Happy gaming everyone!!

Backer Feedback/Discussion #3

Update #23 · Nov 11, 2012 · 32 comments

Welcome back everyone!

Before we get into a discussion, we would like for you all to know that our graphics production has been going great! We WILL have screenshots for you next week! We are currently polishing up the graphics that have been made so that they can be shown at their intended detail.

For this week's discussion/feedback, we wanted to ask you a very personal question.

Has an RPG game ever made you cry?

I actually look for games with very emotional and involving story lines to play. I find that if a video game, or other media, can evoke enough emotion to move someone to tears, then they have succeeded in whatever they were doing!

I'll go first.

There have been many times in my time playing video games where I have been moved to tears or otherwise emotionally struck. Most recent examples include the ending to Zelda Skyward Sword and the first few hours of Xenoblade Chronicles. Both of those games had excellent music and dialogue to accompany those scenes and it really created a wonderful viewing experience.

Of all the RPG games I have played though, one stands out as the most emotionally moving game, Lost Odyssey. I believe that everyone whom has had the pleasure of playing this masterpiece knows exactly which scene I am referring to. Of course, I will not include spoilers, but there is a scene that happens around Ten hours into the game which is the most intense, depressing, yet hauntingly beautiful scene that I have ever witnessed. From that point on I knew I was in for a ride, and Lost Odyssey certainly delivered!

So what about you? Care to share any personal stories? We would love to hear them!

________________________________________________________________

Moving on to our second question, what do you think about love stories in an RPG game? Do they have their place? Do you often find them cheesy, forced, or otherwise lame?

I am often a sucker for a game with a love story. There are some that I really loved like Tidus and Yuna, Kaim and Sarah, and even Emil and Marta! But I do find that many RPG games are plagued with terrible love stories. These are often found in games with stereotypical characters and cheesy dialogue.

Knowing your input of this will greatly help us in how we write some of our characters. Obviously we will hide all the details so as not to spoil anything ;)

________________________________________________________________

We will have a nice update for you next week which include screenshots (Finally!) and new music! We would have shown you some graphics this week, but decided to add in a little more polish just for good measure.

See you all then!

Official Update # 15

Update #22 · Oct 21, 2012 · 6 comments

Hello Everyone!

Apologies on taking a whole month off from updating. We have been very busy and time slipped away from us.

I want to start off tonight informing you all about our Pixel artist. You all should know that the first pixel artist that we started out with has left the team. We have no idea as to why he suddenly vanished, and we will continue to look into it. We have, however, found a new artist and he is even more skilled than the last. We brought him on the team just a few days before our last update. Unfortunately, due to some personal issues, he has unable to complete much work over this last month. Now things are better for him and he has just now started back on a schedule! These sort of problems happen to almost all Indie developed games, so we can recover from it. This dilemma lead to us taking so long on our update this week though you should all know that this will not effect the schedule of EoE at all as all other areas of the game are actually decently ahead of schedule!

 Music:

Our composers are almost done with our soundtrack! They are currently all collaborating on writing the main theme for EoE which will boast some pretty stylish sounds. As you may have noticed, we stopped posting new songs in our updates lately. That is because we don't want to spoil anymore of this awesome soundtrack! We will be sure to post the main theme as soon as it's all nice and polished.

Writing:

As we have said before, we are beyond satisfied with how our story is progressing. We are approaching some of the more intensive and story driven scenes right now, and our vision is be captured perfectly. We really can't wait till you can all experience it!

We have also either written in all of the backer characters or have already planned out their inclusions. We must say that we were very impressed with your imagination and creativity with these characters!

Here is a little snippet of the character Johnny by backer Donovan:

Johnny is a clever and witty detective whom takes himself way to seriously. He was made to be a sort of comic relief character. Johnny finds himself on a quest to return a Queen's missing tiara that takes him all across the World of Rivera. Players bump into Johnny multiple times during his quest which always lead to humorous conversations and the consistent accusation that one particular party member is the thief he is looking for and his incessant desire to woo one of the female party members. Interactions with Johnny will be a treat to the player and were personally written by Donovan to ensure that his character's vision would be realized!

We will have many more Backer character snippets in the future. Also, if for some reason you have yet to submit your backer character, please send the to us ASAP at echoesofeternea@gmail.com.

Twitter:

EoEGames is now on twitter! Follow us @EoEGames. We haven't posted much yet, but would love to hear from you! In the future, our twitter page will be used to give out small doses of info in between updates and we will be sure to keep you fed with various screenshots.

Thank you all for your patience with us during this last month. We promise to not take as long for the next update.

Official Update #14

Update #21 · Sep 23, 2012 · 10 comments

Welcome back everyone!

We have a few updates to share with you!

Battle System:

Production on our battle system has been going great. I wish I could have brought a video to show you, but we ran into a few issues, which have been solved, that slowed progress. I have a few details that I CAN confirm for you though.

We are still keeping the Active Time Battle System.

We have a completely reworked Enchantment and Synthesis system inspired by your comments and suggestions. We will share details at a later date, but you will love what we have come up with.

Pixel Art:

Our graphics are going great! After some new changes and adjustments, we have a much more vibrant and stylish set! More work is needed before we can show it off to you all, so please be patient!

Backer Characters:

We didn't forget about you! We have been having a blast finding cool and interesting ways to include all of your characters into our game, even beyond the side quest that you created. We hope that you enjoy the level of interactivity and personality that we gave to your characters. We will present bios for those characters soon along with some of our original characters.

YUME:

Before I go, I would like to share with you all a cool new Kickstarter project.Yume Sweet Dreams is a stylish new fashion brand based out of Atlanta Ga and it just so happens to be lead by my two best friends! Yume has been in the works since 2010 and I have been on their team as a designer since early 2011. We have cool collaborations planned between EoE and YUME and even have one of their designs on our character Noelle. Please head over to their Kickstarter page and check out their awesome rewards.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/129502385/yume-sweet-dreams

That's it for this update. We will have plenty to show you in the coming months, so please sit tight and thank you for your patience!
