Update #9: Behold: funklet.com

Posted on March 15

Rob Stenson called and said we should make a website with a sequencer that plays Funklet beats.  I, in a stroke of genius, agreed.

Behold: funklet.com (in chrome)

I could list all the features here, but that would take upwards of seven bullet points.  Browse around.  Discover!  Be your true self.  Program a beat.  Tweet it or delete it!

See if you can find the secret code to unlock Maestro Rhythm King samples.

Get new posts fresh on twitter (@funklet) or facebook.  I'm going to post a new beat every day for the first month.

Also, the book is for sale under the "store" tab.

Whoo!,

Jack

Update #8: The Funky Beatles

Posted on October 18, 2011

You all know Bernard Purdie by now.

Bernard claims that he played on some Beatles tracks.  People give him a lot of crap for saying that.  Personally, the thought of Bernard Purdie playing on Beatles tracks makes me happy.  So happy, I made it happen in my bedroom.

(Funklet beat #17, "Hot Sweat" is on "Get Back")

Update #7: State of the Funklet + New Project

Posted on October 11, 2011

I'm down to my last couple Funklets.  It feels like just yesterday I was overwhelmed by large quantities of shipping supplies and red protective vinyl.  Wait … that did happen yesterday.  Different story.

I hope everyone received their stuff in good shape.  (Send me a message if not.)

The Funklet's future is bright.  My friend Rob is thinking about making a website with an interactive Funklet sequencer.  And when Rob thinks, people listen.

I don't have plans to reprint now.  I'll let you know when the Funklet finds a home.  Feel free to send that pdf around to friends who were late to the party.

Jack, you gotta know how excited I am about this. I recently upgraded to a MacBook Pro which will be able to handle my Reason/Record setup better. I'm really excited to pop these beats into the program, because, as a funk novice and rhythmic simpleton, a) I'm not familiar with them by name and b) I can't tell how they sound just by reading the chart. I'm really excited to see what happens when I plumb different lines (eg. hi hat, kick) into different melodic instruments, and start building melodies out of them. How about a fat pipe organ for a kick, a glockenspiel for the snare, and a pizzicato violin for the hi-hat? Or gong, surf guitar, clarinet? Warning klaxons, dog barks, and a rubber ball on a piece of corrugated aluminum? Whee! I know you've been living this reality for a while, and I'm excited to see what I can do when I get my hands on it. Thanks, brother.

Update #5: There's a puppy at the end of the twitter

Posted on July 26, 2011

Put on your 3D glasses and go for a ride!

I put in two solid hours of machine gun tweeting today.  I probably lost a few twitter friends, but it was worth it.

recap:

to encourage early pledging, i had a $1 reward that was time sensitive.  The first person to pledge (Mike Shea) got a nice picture of two puppies tweeted at him.  The second person got a picture of that picture...and so on.

By the fifth pledge, you can't really see the puppies anymore.

I threw all the pictures together and a got a nifty little fly-through.  It's a meaningful animation.  Every frame is a different backer (w/ twitter).

books are in production at the printers.  getting close!!
