Update #4 - New pledges and new pledge upgrades

Update #4 · Nov 16, 2012 · 52 comments

There are some new pledge categories - and this gives some new things to those who have already pledged!

You can also upgrade pledges with physical things (that will be shipped to you). More details here:

http://www.frontier.co.uk/dangerous_kickstarter_pledges/pledges/

Once again, thanks for all the support. It is really heartening.

This campaign needs a serious boost. We need more low price incentives to attract pledges. Reprints of Dark Wheel? Pledger's name dropped into the official sequel of the Dark Wheel? Pledger's name as an NPC in-game (e.g. quest giver)? Cobra Mk III pendants? The possibilities are limitless...

Sorry, but I'm pretty uninspired by the pledge upgrades. How about some in-game items instead? Maybe some custom equipment, paint-jobs, etc. that we can start with that are unique to the backers?

Oh and BTW, have you had a look at the success of the Star Citizen campaign? Frequent updates with the kind of content to keep backers on the edge of their seats and upping their pledges have made it a record-breaker. Something to learn from? Only 44 days to go...

I'm not sure about offering merchandise for extra pledges in this way. It means when we reach the goal some of the budget has already been spent. If we need £1.25mil to kickstart this project, I want you guys to have the money.
In my opinion it would have been more transparent to offer merchandise to members on a cost plus basis. For example, a T-shirt for £30, where £15 adds to the pledge fund would be a fairer way of getting the funding we need, without wasting pledged money on merchandise.

A bumper sticker would be cheap to produce and ship, so could make a fair bit of profit at a lower level.
We could then circle carparks shooting each other with our headlights and jettisining stuff out of the boot (trunk!)

These add-ons are good but to suggest a few more ideas - you could include:

      - a badge of the Elite: Dangerous logo ( around about £5 each ).
      - a variety of USB sticks shaped like the various ships in the game, each containing a digital copy of the game on it ( around about £15-£20 each, depending on size of drive and cost of manufacture ).
      - a few ships in game for backers only - starter ships ( with a digital code to give to the player at start of game ) and/ or ships to be purchased later once the player has the in-game cash, each allocated with special features such as increased cargo space, extra weapon slots and possibly pre-installed equipment.
      - a hanger to store purchased equipment, ships and commodities at the start of the game ( using a digital code ).

Numerous postings have been made here and in the normal "Comments" area about a physical box. Give us a physical box, you will get a higher pledge from us. Also, I must side with Frontier on this one issue, people have been saying that this is an expensive campaign, in terms of the bonus items... yes.. that is true but... that's the whole point, this project is huge, they need to raise about 2 million US dollars in a short amount of time, if this project will succeed then they need to have some serious cash flow coming in. This is a kickstarter campaign, meaning that the majority of our pledge is a donation to see this project succeed, as I have said before, this game is probably only worth about 80 pounds, however I am willing to give 400 to see it on my shelf as long as I get my physical box , cd or usb stick, star map, and book. Yes it is expensive.... that is why it is a kickstarter campaign. If you don't like Elite enough to donate 100 for the mug, novel, and t-shirt... then don't... that is the nature of capitalism n' freedom. How about listening to Phillip Harris, Nats, taumel, Si Waters, Iain Smith, Gimi, and on and on and on... I could keep cutting and pasting all day. This is what we want... give us what we want, you will get the pledges you want... really that is about it.

"As I said yesterday if they had created a new tier with a box, the game, paper manual, digital music, art pamphlet and a paper novel and sold it at around £80 they could have made several £1000s yesterday from upgraded pledges." - Nats

"Btw. a boxed version is still missing." - taumel

"That's all we need. This is a retro game, let's give it a retro box. I reckon that would get most of the 20,30,40 GBP folk up." - Si Waters

I am sorry, but to have to pay twice for posting and handling, especially within the EU, doesn't sound fair. The Mug, Tshirt and Novel would be 100 pounds (which is still quite much, without having seen how they are to be) , but 30% added for Shipping? Too much right now, sorry.

How about adding a "signed box copy of the game" to the list?

One of my treasured memories of a previous period in my life is a copy of "Lander" (the Psygnosis remake inspired by the original Beeb game) that is signed for me by the development team before the Liverpool Studio got disbanded. That was the last game for the Liverpool Studio that I project managed the translation for - prior to that I handled pretty much every one of their Playstation titles including the original 'Gran Turismo' ... it was a time in my life that was as stressfull as hell but also very rewarding.

Also +1 for star map poster and different postage price for lightweighted goods (10 maybe)

Creator Joe Young on November 16, 2012

Yeah, I will definitely up my pledge to include the music as well, however, what about the physical game itself. I am really interested in the book too! Make an option for the game in a box, the book (doesn't even need to be signed but it would be nice), and the music, and you will have my £200-£400, throw in a poster or a star map like in the original and you will have my money in a heartbeat. The thing is, I am donating much money like everyone else to this project. To me this game is probably not worth more than £80 for the physical game box and game, music cd, poster, & book. So if I pledge £200 then dammit, I want something more than the audio cd, which I will rip once onto my mp3 player and then put it on my shelf forever and ever. This is starting to resemble a kickstarter campaign now, but it isn't quite there yet. Give us some real rewards just like the other games and projects on this website and you will get some real pledges... at least from me. I am definitely happy this is moving in the correct direction though.

Creator Styggron [ELITE VETERAN SINCE 1985] on November 16, 2012

Correction. I need to retract my comment regarding digital copies and suggestions Frontier could add new tiers with this.

Frontier HAS indeed added a 35 and 45 pound tier for digital copies of the music and the darkwheel.

Thank you David and Frontier, I am so sorry I somehow missed seeing that and then made the suggestion for digital copies. A sincere apology.

I hope the CD digital download comes with a digital download of the artwork for a CD cover too :)

@BenTan Yes I agree. One item 15 pounds, two items maybe 22 pounds etc something like that would be more reasonable but at least we have digital options there now which I think is REALLY nice of Frontier.

VERY happy with my original pledge I am already in for the digital soundtrack and digital novel.

Possibly Frontier might look into the combined postage for overseas orders. Lets hope so. :-)

Creator Ben on November 16, 2012

I'll have to agree with you on the combined postage @Styggron. It seems irrational not able to combine all the physicals under one shipping package. It may be over the 15 pounds limit but still, maybe have a way to scale the cost of shipping according to the price of actual shipping.

    27. Whoops-asteroid2-png.small

Creator Styggron [ELITE VETERAN SINCE 1985] on November 16, 2012

I would like to thank Frontier for making these items available. That is a very good thing.

Frontier of course cannot control exchange rates and postage rates but 15 pounds per extra item seems a little steep...at least for me in Australia. Total of 65 pounds for a t shirt and a mug is out of my reach I'm afraid.

Pity there are no digital downloads for the music CD I would have liked that but 35 pounds (around $53 AUD) is too much for a single sound track.

I understand this is just normal life, some people have more money than others but I was hoping for some digital content as I obviously cannot justify CD, Tshit/Mug and Dark wheel for 145 pounds or $265AUD on top of my pledge already.

I realise Frontier need a blanket amount for postage but surely items can be combined ?

A CD and say the signed book cannot cost 30 pounds postage alone. Thats 80 pounds of items and 30 pounds postage goodness 37.5% of the item value just postage.

Maybe some of these items will be available after kickstarter maybe not.

Please forgive me in that I am not trying to whinge, what is offered is great, fantastic the prices seem a little bit out of whack. I realise they are add ons rather than update of pledges.

You cannot change pledges already there but you can add new ones I think...not sure on that though. Maybe a new 60 pounds could give you what the 50 one has plus a DIGITAL download of the music ?

Just a thought....it may not be possible but some digital options would be good too.

Thanks again to David and Frontier.

Rather than CDs, paperbacks and model ships how about something more modest? I'd consider spending a total of ~£40 for a boxed copy of the game; or ~£75 for a signed boxed copy of the game.
