Hi, my name is Dena and I was born & raised in Southern California to a Liberian mother and Sierra Leonean father. Although I have endless curiosities about both my parents' cultures, this project will focus on my mom. My Mother’s Land will be a book about discovery. Discovery of my mother, discovery of the land she came from and ultimately discovery of self.

In the upcoming months I plan to visit Monrovia, Liberia to learn about the land that shaped the caring hands, kind heart & loving soul that raised me; The place that shaped her strong will, know-it-all attitude, vivacious nature and accent so sweet you couldn’t help but smile when you heard her speak.

The plan is to learn all that I can, not only about my mother, but the country she came from. Along with my family history, I will explore the deep rooted history of Liberia that extends back to the return of American slaves, the more recent happenings of the civil war and the current eco/socio/political stand point of Liberia. I will learn about Liberian culture and see the natural beauties this great land has to offer.

This will not be a sad story of my late mother and a war-torn nation, but a triumphant tale of a resilient land with a bright future and one of the many strong individuals that this nation birthed.
