An operetta that juxtaposes a fairy kingdom with the political word of the House of Lords begs for a float in Houston's pride parade!
This summer's offering from the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Houston is Iolanthe. It is one of the least often performed of G&S' magnificent oeuvre of operettas but a delightful gem nevertheless. Juxtaposing a realm of magical fairies with the House of Lords, the show lampoons aristocracy and politicians as ineffective and dim-witted (seems apropos for an election year).
As one of the least well known G&S shows, we need help getting the word out and what better venue than a major Pride Parade? With over 300,000 attendees each year, a float in Houston’s celebration would garner untold attention. Our float will carry the Queen of the Fairies, but she won’t be the only one along Westheimer come June 23rd!
This project will help us create and produce such a float. The entry fee for the parade is $470. The estimated rental cost for a 12 foot stake bed truck is $300. That leaves $230 and any extra amount for the decorations! :D Help us get this float on the road!
