A travelling studio that offers free creative workshops to the public; we bring stories to life in weird and wonderful ways.
What exactly is this project? A tour of free, creative, eco-powered workshops working towards one final showcase evening - it's going to be an adventure!
A little more detail.... It's all about collaboration. There are going to be a series of free workshops across England to which anyone above the age of 7 is invited. In these workshops we will build stories; each scene is made by a different person so that each finished story will have been on an entirely unique journey around England through the imaginations of many, many people.
The stories will be brought to life with animation, illustration, stop-motion animation, acting, puppets, shadow puppets - any way you can think, there are no rules, as long as it can be captured on film.
At the end of the Imagination Tour (which will take place between May and September 2013), there will be a big showcase evening in Bristol. We hope to take over a disused warehouse, cover the walls in projections of films, fill the floor with puppets and models and theatres, have a fashion show and much, much more. The final event will be a fantastic show of all that was created on the tour; an exhibition that demands participation and a showcase of what great collaboration can create.
Eco Eco Eco! Last, but by no means least, the workshops and the final event will be entirely eco-powered. We have energy generating bicycles from 'Electric Pedals' and wind-up lighting.
Where is the money going to go? 'Electric Pedals', our magical energy making machines. Materials to build miniature theatres for the films; textiles to make puppets, costumes and props; drawing equipment such as paper, pens, inks. Then the larger things, without which the tour wouldn't be possible; a van; venue hire; lighting (which will be powered by the pedals); a camera and tripod (we already have a set but need another one, if not two of each - the more we have, the more people can participate). And the less exciting; insurance - for the van, equipment, public liability, staff and so on. The more we can raise, the bigger and better the whole tour will be.
Holly, Teddie and all the other artists and helpers involved are taking no payment from this project, for us it is a labour of love and an exciting experiment. Anything made will be spent to make each workshop - and the final show - bigger, better and truly special.
Thank you so much for any support you can give us and please pass on word of our project if you know of anyone who might like to get involved!
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Originally we were hoping to have a tent set-up, but in conversations with town councils we decided this would be unsafe for the equipment overnight. For the most part we have managed to secure venues for a minimal charge, and this has helped to keep our budget down.
The main challenge we face, after gathering enough funding, is to make sure that enough people know about Magpie Theatre to support the tour. We will be advertising in local papers, on radio stations and on the internet but it will be a constant battle to raise awareness. On the days of the events, we will have a team of friends to roam the streets surrounding Magpie Theatre, gathering people and roping them in as they pass.
When we first set out our project proposal, we imagined that reaching a budget £35'000 would be no problem and that EVERYONE would want to help us... Oh how wrong we could be! We weren't eligible for the grants we had counted on; town councils didn't think we were 'appropriate' for them; friends who'd promised to help dropped out - the list goes on - but these set backs served only to help us. We have learnt to focus on exactly what we want to do and how we want to do it. We have worked out the strictest of budgets (brought down from £35'000 to just £6'000) so that if we only recieve a small percentage of what we hoped for, the project will still take place.
We have built good relationships with the towns we hope to visit; many have been kindly supportive thus far and we are confident that they will help where they can to make the project a success.
