Help NW School of the Arts make history (and pay for sets and costumes) with the life-affirming musical about love- The Color Purple.
Northwest School of the Arts presents "The Color Purple"
I can remember sitting in my high school Anatomy class with this novel and being completely transported into the world of Celie, Shug, Nettie, Mister, Harpo, and Sofia. To this day, I (and a bevy of people I know) can quote the movie verbatim. When the musical was presented in New York City five years ago, Broadway was transformed. Now, Northwest School of the Arts is EXTREMELY proud to pass this story on to a new generation.
Northwest is a small performing arts magnet school in Charlotte, NC. We are nationally recognized for our Theatre, Dance, Visual Arts, and Music programs. Although mighty in talent, we are tremendously limited in resources. More than 200 of our students will be involved in this production. The work entails more than just the cast members, it also includes the stage crew, costumers, set builders, publicity committee, ushers, and pit orchestra. This Kickstarter campaign is to give us a "leg-up" in financing the costumes, sets, and publicity for this production.
The show will be presented September 14-16, 2012 at the beautiful Dale F. Halton Theatre on the Campus of Central Piedmont Community College. We are also honored to have a tremendously talented production team that includes one of Northwest's distinguished alumni, Grasan Kingsberry. Grasan is one our choreographers and he brings a true inside perspective on the show because he was in the original cast of "The Color Purple" on Broadway. Finally, because this is so early into the school year, the rehearsal process for this show will be similar performing in summer stock in that there is only a three-week rehearsal period. "The Color Purple" is a special production that falls outside of the realm of our regular season. It is special because of its content and the nature of the show. This is an opportunity that is difficult to pass up, however, it is stretching our current budget to the breaking point.
With the production team's insistence, the students will meet the challenge of this show. With your assistance, the show's production value will be raised to the level of these students' performance level.
