About this project
In March of 2010, we [Alex, the writer/director & myself, Petra Ahmann, the producer] took a trip to Montana to determine if it was the right backdrop for our next feature film, which at the time, was still unwritten. We were both filmmakers in New York City, so Montana was a major change from the fast-paced hustler mentality we were accustomed to. First of all, film production is very far removed from the agricultural & mining communities that bring in all of the state's revenue. Unlike New York, people in Montana are excited to be a part of the movie business. They greeted us with open arms, and showed us nothing but hospitality. It was exactly the type of environment we wanted to work in for Silverline's [our production company's] "coming out" project. At that time, we were able to raise enough money to finance the development of a feature length script that was good enough to attract major talent on all levels. Today, with major attachments in place and script in toe, we are seeking to raise the remaining funds to shoot the film.
The synopsis of the film is as follows:
Last Man Stands tells the story of a modern day Crow Indian family living in rural Montana. Having left the reservation to seek a new life they are tragically confronted with the death of a son who is killed while serving in Iraq. A once patriotic father's change of heart forces a younger brother to stand up to his beliefs or succumb to pressure risking perhaps losing the only family he has left. For that he must look to his friends, his true love and ultimately to the wisdom of the Elders in search of the answers that will guide him to his destiny. Visited by a shape-shifting spirit who appears in the form of a majestic eagle, Last Man Stands incorporates elements of the supernatural into the ordinary. A stunning visual style and sweeping dramatic arc evoke a genuinely American story that is universal to our time.
At this time, we have already attached an amazing cast that we are extremely excited to have on board. Alex Meraz, (Paul in the Twilight series), is playing our lead "Taylor." Chaske Spencer (also from Twilight) plays his older brother, "Charlie." True to their god-father/god-son relationship in actuality, Raoul Trujillo plays the father of Alex Meraz. Raoul is best known for his work in Mel Gibson's Apocalypto. Irene Bedard is on board as "Janine," the boys' mother.
Our team of producers is working around the clock to raise the complete funds to get this movie made. Our producing team consists of Chad Nicholson, who is also a producer on the project, Sarah-May Levy, our casting director & associate producer, and Austen Elmore, also an associate producer. We are attempting to attach one more cast member in order to get this done. (As you may or may not know, the right cast makes everything possible!) That cast member's name cannot be revealed until we officially have them on board, however! So far, this person is our biggest star yet, even bigger than our stars from Twilight. With them on board, we will most definitely be able to accomplish the greater goal of getting this movie made! There's only one catch. We have to be able to make him or her an offer & follow through with it immediately. That's where you come in. By supporting our fund-raising efforts we will be able to offer this cast member the role they've been waiting for and finish financing the rest of the film.
We strongly believe in creating independent films. Too many of the films that come out of Hollywood are more of the same thing. We believe that Last Man Stands is a one-of-a-kind project yet to be seen by audiences. We also believe that it is a story that must be told and must be told now. There is no doubt in any of our minds that there will be serious Oscar nomination potential for this project. We are more than excited to show that potential to all of our backers and financiers! Be a part of history with this amazing project!

Petra was born and raised in Laurel, Montana. She moved to New York City to become a filmmaker and founded Silverline Cinema with director, Alex Portugal. Returning to her own backyard made the most sense for Silverline's break-out movie, Last Man Stands. It will give locals a chance to participate in a process that would not otherwise be a part of their life. It will also greatly benefit the production value of the project.
