About this project

A lot of stories are told about the shocking plight of Africans across the continent. And we also often hear about the great lengths that people and organizations go to while bringing lifesaving aid to Africa.

But the vast middle, where regular people go about their daily lives with the same basic needs, wants, and desires as the rest of the planet...this is a story that is rarely told.

Award winning photographer/filmmaker/writer Emmett Williams will travel across Africa over six months collecting stories to create a multimedia project incorporating photography, video-journalism and writing. He will begin his journey in January of 2010, visiting as many countries as possible while still keeping true to the project goals.

Four arts projects will result from this trip:

1. A photo exhibit, which will have its first viewing in South Africa in June 2010 as part of the KICKING AND SCREENING FILM FESTIVAL, which coincides with the World Cup. The exhibit will then travel throughout the world.

2. A book of photography and stories entitled “OURS IS THE LAND OF TRIBES”. Alongside the photos will be the words of the people in the pictures, telling their life story in their own way.

3. A documentary film chronicling the trip.

4. A website/blog, updated regularly, which will not only serve as a way to document the stories, but as a way to help sponsors keep track of the projects progress.

Mission Man Media's website as well as the personal website of the Producer/Director of the project, Emmett Williams, will be heavily utilized to spread the word and help raise awareness and funds for the project. Emmett will also post regular updates, announcements and pledge requests on Facebook, Twitter and to his international mailing list.

We will continue to pursue other funding alternatives such as private and public grants. There will be a dedicated blog/vlog, which will chronicle the evolution of the project and help everyone stay in touch with Emmett and his progress while he is shooting/filming/writing about Africa

We need to raise $7500 to move the project forward. This will get Emmett to Africa and will cover transportation, food, general travel expenses, and some equipment costs.

No matter the medium, the most important aspect of creating art, to me, has been telling the story. Whether its in photography, film, music, or writing, I’ve focused on documenting events in a way that is both challenging and accessible to audiences.

So I started Mission Man Media as a way to tell new stories in ways not seen before. So far we have succeeded with projects focusing on Indigenous people throughout North America thriving in a 21st century world, a summer camp in Georgia for kids with Tourette syndrome, and now a multimedia project based in Africa.

Though I was born in St. Louis, extreme wanderlust has shown me many addresses, landscapes and people. What I’ve learned along the way is that everyone has a story, if you dig deep enough and simply take an interest. So I started making art in an attempt to tell stories that have been told to me.

And if, during the process, we can all learn a little bit more about ourselves, then that makes my job even better.
