I have written a rock musical/dream play set in a therapist's loft apartment. The show is called "Above Hell's Kitchen." Loosely based on Mozart's "Don Giovanni" it's a gothic tale of a neurotic rock musician as well as a surreal and lyrical love story.
Last year I presented it as a staged reading with five actor/singers and also my band, Spottiswoode & His Enemies, here in New York City at Joe's Pub. This year, we have the honor of being selected to present six full stagings at the New York Musical Theater Festival (NYMF).
NYMF is the most important and prestigious festival for new musicals in the world. Several Broadway shows and even a Pulitzer Prizewinner have started there. The competition is fierce. Only 12 pieces from 400 submissions were selected for their 2010 Next Link Series. "Above Hell's Kitchen" was one of them!
This is a huge opportunity! It's a chance to present this musical in New York City in a way that actually gets it seen! By fans, theater lovers, and also by potential producers. The Festival is highly respected. This is a huge opportunity both to put the show on its feet and also to find backers to take it to the next level.
It's too good an opportunity to pass up!
With the help of the folks at La Vie Productions we have started assembling a wonderful collection of talented and dedicated theater professionals - actors, a director, lighting/set/sound designers, a choreographer, tech people, stage managers and so forth. And there are many other costs - transportation and admin fees, set expenses, rehearsal space rental etc.
The budget for the show is $xx,xxx.xx (we can't actually tell you how much it is...but believe me...it's a lot). Compared to other shows in the Festival this is remarkably cheap. Still it's a lot of money! We need your help!!!
In addition to seeking private investors we are hoping to raise $15,000 through Kickstarter. The deadline is the day of the last performance when many of the final costs of the production are due.
