About this project

Hi,

I am Daniel Bayer, a professional photographer based out of the Central Rockies in Colorado. In 2004, I created and founded the concept of the "Kodachrome Project", a means in which to petition to Eastman Kodak to keep legendary Kodachrome film supported long enough to have it be visually celebrated in it's 75th year of use. I have succeeded in doing that and now it is time for me to hit the road and shoot all the film I have saved up, some 1,000 rolls and do a wonderful book portraying the U.S. in truly remarkable times and properly bookend the Kodachrome era with powerful and yet relevant photography.

I have my film and processing covered, as well as my living arrangements while on the road, a modern pop-up camper on my Toyota truck that is solar powered.

What I need funding for is fuel, food, and all related production and travel expenses. I had saved up a good portion of this on my own, but the economic collapse caused a drop in paid work over the past year necessitating my using part of that savings to live. This is estimated to exceed US $25,000 during the 16 month period I am working on the project. The book will be published in late 2011.

This is literally a once in a lifetime project, the opportunity will never repeat it self again and I have to see it be all that it can be. With the "Kodachrome Project, I have already inspired thousands of photo enthusiasts and professionals to use the film on meaningful images before it is too late. In June of this year, Eastman Kodak chose me along with 3 other people to come out to Rochester, New York to help them craft the announcement of the retirement of Kodachrome film. I now have until the end of next year to shoot rich essays and stand alone features that really do this era justice as it comes to a close. Since the announcement on June 22nd, 2009, I have been mentioned in several articles in venues like the Wall Street Journal, The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, The San Francisco Chronicle and my site now receives a healthy amount of hits per month.
