Mr. Asyraf thank you so much for your helpful advice and information!!! Yes, i agreee, Bunyi Guitar wasn't pop yeh yeh at all.. but it opened the door for Pop Yeh Yeh to be created.. I guess technically Bunyi Guitar was a "twist" song : ) which was popular just before the beatles hit... actually some would say it was a chubby checker invention.. so it makes sense as a precursor to Pop Yeh Yeh.. I have also heard that the first Pop Yeh Yeh song was Suzana by the late legend, M Osman. I really appreciate your advice on all of this. Also,if I can find Ismail Kasdi, DHatta, or members of the CLiffters, that would be great.. I have several 45s from D Hatta , as well as one by the Cliffters. It would be great to meet Salim I --- wow... that would be amazing. Im sorry to hear about Siti Zaiton. she was one of my favorites... that's sad. And also, yes, I know that Salamiah Hassan and Sharifah Aini came later on, in the 70s - so not Pop Yeh Yeh.. but i want to try to meet artists of the 70s too -- at least the ones who were still making great music -- like these two singers.. Anyway, sorry for the complicated answer, I really appreciate all your tips --- please email me at carlitoyehyeh@yahoo.com if you find any clues to help me find these people. I do hope maybe you and I will also meet maybe... best regards, Carl
And one more thing Mr Carl try to locate a pop yeh yeh artist called Hussein Ismail cos i am sure he is stll alive as he appeared in a concert on december 2009 in singapore expo.He is really popular in the mid 60s.and another pop yeh yeh artist called Ismail kasdi and he is in singapore but i am not to sure which part of singapore does he reside and lastly is DHatta from a band called D4Ever once a participant of singapore rolling stones competition but the band lost to the cliffters and end up second.
Hello there Mr Carl.I heard that you are going to singapore and malaysia to do research on the malay pop 60s pop yeh yeh, so i thought of helping you out.Firstly M Osman has deceased long time ago and Salim I,I heard that he is still alive so best of luck finding him cos some of his song is pretty psychedelic and if possible try to locate a band called The Cliffters cos in the mid 60s they were called Singapore Rolling stones though their song doesnt really sound like rolling stone but its worth a try and one more thing salamiah hassan and sharifah aini rise to fame in the mid 70s so count them out on your research since you are doing research on pop yeh yeh.Halim yatim has deceased already and try to find a band called les fentones and The Mods cos these bands rise to prominence first and then it attract the attention of other malay youth to form a beatles wannabe band. And as far as i know the first local pop yeh yeh song is Suzana sang by our very own M Osman & The Mods and im sorry to say at that time P Ramlee song bunyi Gitar wasnt considered as the first pop yeh yeh song and last but not least i am sorry to say but Siti zaiton has deceased already. So this is the only information that i could provide you with since i wasnt born in the 60s but in 1994 but let me assure Mr Carl my information is pretty accurate cos i ask my grandparents and in a malay blog called Popoknet.I want to thank you for doing a research on pop yeh yeh cos i dont see any malay would have the iniative to make a documentary or atleast a research on pop yeh yeh.Once again Good luck on your journey finding those pop yeh yeh artist and i hope it would be a success and who know maybe we would stuble upon each other when you are doing your research in singapore this july.
Dill, thanks for the tip on Sharifah Aini!! I'll try to look her up! : )
Dear Nads, and Natasha, thanks so much for writing to me.. it's really cool that you told your father about this project too. Yes A Rahman Hassan, and Jeffridin are both legends.. and both would be on my list of people who I would love to interview and include on the compilation. I have records by both of these artists.. I dont know why i didnt put them on my list here already!! Natasha, your research paper is full of great information - thanks so much for sharing that excerpt with me.. very helpful. Nads, unfortunately the project here is closed i think.. but you might still be able to pledge.. im not sure.. either way, your comments have given me alot of inspiration.. so that's support right there!! : ) btw, please send me a message rather than a comment so i can reply to you directly!
Hi Carl, as my sister Nads pointed out: My dad is the consummate Pop Yeh Yeh fan(atic), and thinks that this project is almost "groundbreaking". That said he suggests including A Rahman Hassan to your list. And, you're right, it's an overlooked musical genre. Which was why I included it in my sociology research paper on Malaysian pop culture. Here's an excerpt that you might find useful:
"The 50s opened the passage for the materializing rock and roll era of the 60s. Beatlemania was becoming a norm in the West and emerging in the East; an almost malignant phenomenon with teenage girls due to their (The Beatles’) sex appeal and boys the catchy up-tempo pop rhythm which masks wistful lyrics with upbeat sing-a-long melody, and simple (guitar) chord manipulations. The unprecedented explosion of John, Paul, George, and Ringo affectionately known as the ‘Fab Four’ onto American mainstream music industry in early 1964 corresponded with the babyboomer period of post-World War II, and the expansion of the youth market.
Mass hysteria permeated the globe, as young women became entranced with not only their musical prowess, but (most importantly) their stage persona [Kureishi & Savage, 1995, p. 117]. They were marketed as clean-cut boys, almost preppy in their outfits of matching suits complete with ties; the sort of boys young girls in that era were encourage to pursue, albeit with one exception: they were pop stars. The catholic schoolboy façade they put on, would inadvertently add to their sex appeal as the poster boys of pop. The boys wanted to dress like them and be them because the girls wanted them. Malaysia was not spared the madness, practically simultaneously as the Brit-pop bang in Britain and pop eruption in America, we corresponded with Pop Yeh Yeh a musical genre characterized by its frequent use of the “yeah, yeah, yeah” expression, a signature of The Beatles’ 1963 single She Loves You (Yeah, Yeah, Yeah). Hence, “culturism” prevailed in the early 1960s, instigated by Malayan youths who despite social difficulties chose to consign the pioneers of a cultural group to their facades or external appearances [Holliday, Hyde & Kullman, 2006, p. 24].
These Beatles’ wannabes usually hailed from newly developed urban settlements like Kuala Lumpur’s Kampung Baru. They study and impersonate The Beatles and their successors (such as The Monkees) to their best from mannerisms to stage and performance gimmicks and even band members’ characters at no expense spared. The media labeled these bands kugiran(s) abbreviation for kumpulan gitar rancak (up-tempo guitar band). These bands rose from humble beginnings; most of them started out as wedding bands, entertainment during wedding receptions and grew to a popular Malaysian musical genre. They are the foundation for Malaysia’s rock scene, most notable of these bands are The Falcons, The Strollers, Jefry Din and the Siglap Five, and A. Ramli and the Rhythm Boys with cult following spanning West and East Malaysia from Singapore to Kuching. "
