The Goal
I'm Kevin T. Morales and Secondary is my first attempt at a commercial production in New York. I'm a union director who has directed over thirty professional productions and getting Secondary to an Off-Broadway or Broadway production represents the greatest artistic challenge I've faced. The money raised through Kickstarter will allow me to present a reading with Broadway professionals in an industry accepted space. The goal is to sharpen the play, and give New York producers a chance to see the piece alive and beating.

The Play
The main theme in Secondary is centered on the nature of abuse. Not only physical, but emotional and self-inflicted. Offenses committed by professional athletes are often ignored by fans and the community at large. I'm a huge sports fan and I have looked past these infractions like many others, and that requires a kind of self deception on our part. The additional crime committed by abusive people is the lies they tell themselves to justify their actions. Lies we often choose to accept. I've always been bothered by our culture's apathy towards domestic violence, rape and abuse as it appears in movies and television. Sadly, the act my main character commits that sets the events of the play in motion will not be considered by a lot of people to be that serious. Not when most cop shows open with a weekly victim of violence or sexual assault; not when many films throw in rape or violence towards women as an easy way to get some nudity in. But the abuse committed by my main character is most serious, and a symptom of greater problems with his nature, and our culture. The play is about coming forward, and being honest.

Then support the first step in my audacious goal of bringing this piece to life in the greatest city for theater in the world. With the money raised I will hire Broadway actors and a great director to rehearse and present the script to producers, managers, backers and agents. If the script is as good as I believe it is, then it will find a home, and eventually a New York production and we will have done it together, thanks to your generosity. Any funds raised over my goal will help secure a better presentation and be allocated to the next step after the reading - the Workshop.
