I've been invited by the Museum of Arts and Design in NYC to participate in a live open studio where I will produce several braided wool rugs.

I've been invited by the Museum of Arts and Design in NYC (http://madmuseum.org) to participate in a live open studio where I will be producing several hand-dyed braided wool rugs.

The goal of the museum's 'Open Studios' program is to introduce the public to the artistic process by putting on view in one of their galleries an artist at work. Visitors can enter the studio space, engage the artist, ask questions, and learn more about the steps an artist/designer/craftsperson takes to produce new work.

I will be spending time in the studio from October 26th to the 29th, experimenting with hand-dyeing wool and turning it into small, 3' in diameter, circular braided rugs. Making braided rugs is an extremely old technique that is as straightforward as it is beautiful and I'm looking forward to experimenting with this type of construction and giving it new life.

The money raised will be put directly toward materials and tools. I hope to have several finished area rugs at the end of the process, so I am running the pre-sale through Kickstarter. I'd love to keep making the rugs after the open studio, so the success of the fundraising will also help determine interest in the project and its future.

p.s. A note to potential backers: "PRE-SALE" in this case means buying a rug before it's been produced. NOT buying the right to buy a rug later. A pledge of $200 gets you a rug when the project is completed. Simple! A couple folks reminded me that pre-sale might mean something different to different people. Sorry for the confusion!

    For a pledge of $200, I'm offering a pre-sale for the braided rugs I'll be making during the open studio. Each one will be hand-made and unique. If you have a color request please send me a note and let me know beforehand. I will be hand-dyeing the wool, so the only color I can't provide is white. The base wool will be an off-white cream. Examples of the some of the version I'll be making appear in the video.
